A Fun Project: This Will Keep You Busy
By Cristina from New England, USA on 9/14/2014
For the price, this dollhouse kit is a great value, especially since it comes with house siding and roof shingles. It is a very time-consuming project--which I don't mind, as I'm building this house as a hobby--but if you're planning on whipping this house together in a weekend, you'd may as well splurge and buy a pre-assembled house at your local hobby or toy store, Otherwise, you will wind up with a shabby-looking dollhouse! Be careful in punching out the wooden pieces, or they will snap. Follow directions to a T to ensure you don't create more of a mess than necessary. I am in the "finishing touches" stage of working on this house, meaning I still need to put in windows, trim, etc. It took me about ten to twelve hours to assemble the main frame of the house and all interior walls (minus the attic and roof); the two inside fireplaces, including one with a built-in bookcase flanking it; two fireplaces; and the main staircase inside. Currently, I've primed the window casings and sills and will paint those before gluing them to the plastic windows. Note: It is MUCH smarter to prime and paint or simply stain the trim pieces before attaching them. Also prepare to have lots of hot glue sticks and a hot glue gun on hand. Sandpaper of varying grains is a good choice, too--I was out and used emery boards, which were perfect for the smaller pieces. I also plan on using wood filler to "patch up" some of the gaps between pieces. I will then sand and smooth out the work before priming and painting. Keep the box for visual reference and make sure you read the "tips" sheet that is also included--don't just skip right to the directions. I also recommend having plenty of sandwich bags and sticky-notes or a permanent marker handy. Some of the pieces will become "unpunched" from the wood before you need them, and even writing the number of the wood sheet on the back is confusing. I did this, but also put any "loose" pieces (and scraps, just in case) in labeled sandwich bags. The wooden sheets are labeled effectively, I think, so you can just follow their numbering system. Keep a pencil handy, too, in case you need to jot down a number on the back of a piece of wood or even cross out steps in the directions (which I found useful). As they suggest, DRY FIT everything before gluing into place. All in all, slow and steady will win the race--and build and better dollhouse. I look forward to finishing and decorating the house with accessories and furniture, but that may be a few months off, as I can only work on the house a few hours each weekend, due to a high-stress job. You can see why I needed a hobby to release some tension! Note: I have a feeling this project would go more smoothly with two people working on it together, but I'm a solo hobbyist (and a woman with a pretty good knowledge of how to use tools and be "crafty"), and it's been working out for me.
