Rolling Stones Ready To Rock

So far, their latest tour lineup includes just nine U.S. dates in major cities, but more are expected to be added – and international stops are expected to be added after that.

Rolling Stones Announce New Tour Dates

Rolling Stones announce "50 & Counting" tour dates for North America.

The Stones formed in London in 1962; that same year, they played their first set of blues and Chuck Berry songs at the Marquee Club (which would eventually also host acts including Jimi Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Yes, The Who … you get the idea). Their first international hit wouldn’t peak until three years later – 1965’s “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”

Obviously, a band’s 50-plus-year history yields a lot of stories – in the Stones’ case, those include famous lovers, arrests, member departures, record label moves, solo recordings, and a long-running series of clashes between Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards. There’s plenty of lighter trivia, too, though (enough to warrant a Rolling Stones edition of Trivial Pursuit, even). A few fun facts:

  • The band got its name from the same place Rolling Stone magazine did – blues musician Muddy Waters’ 1950 song “Rollin’ Stone.” In fact, a “g” wasn’t part of the band’s initial name – it was added in 1963.
  • The Rolling Stones weren’t pictured all together on the cover of Rolling Stone until 1994.
  • Mick Jagger and Keith Richards are known collectively as the Glimmer Twins.
  • The Stones’ famous tongue-and-lip logo was designed by John Pasche – not, as many claim, Andy Warhol.

Something else to consider: the image on our Mick Jagger The Rolling Stones Performance 1973 by James Fortune was captured in concert 40 years ago this year. It’s a must-have for fans – along with tickets to the latest gigs.
