Fire Pits

In a word....quality! I've been searching for a fire pit that would last for years. This one appears to be the answer I've been looking for. Solid steel, quality welding, and a great finish!

We unboxed and assembled our new fire pit today, and are really pleased so far. It seems nice and sturdy, went together quickly and easily, and we just had our first fire in it. As others have reported, it off-gasses (the new paint smokes a little) for the first few minutes when it gets good and hot, then that goes away. The one we received wasn't quite as chocolate brown looking as the one in the illustration. It's pretty much charcoal or black looking, but attractive. The legs match the kettle. In the illustration it looked to us like they were a contrasting color, but on ours, they match the kettle. The little wood-handled lifter arm for hoisting the mesh top seems barely equal to the task. I have a feeling the weld holding the rod to the handle may not hold up very long. None of those are a big deal to us. The fire pit is attractive, a nice shape, and it looks good in the yard. The removable mesh top is a nice touch and works well to limit ash. A couple interesting little things I noticed. A fire in one of these seems to create its own atmosphere, so even with the mesh top off, ash tends to rise and then get sucked back down into the kettle like popcorn in an air popper. Speaking of popcorn, there's also an interesting acoustical effect when burning in a kettle. When the fire pops and crackles, it reverberates a little, so it sounds like popcorn popping in a kettle. We like it. We got the big one, and it's definitely that, but not awkwardly so. The up side to the larger diameter is that you can put 24" logs into it. And it's deep besides, so you could load it up for a whole evening if you wanted to. It comes with a nice cover made of stretchy vinyl with an elastic "waist" that holds it snugly in place. The cover seems tailored to be a very nice fit for the kettle, and we've resolved to be consistent about keeping it covered when not in use, to help keep it nice as long as possible. In short, I'm impressed and satisfied with our new fire pit. Assuming it holds up well, our family will be enjoying lots of time around it in the years ahead.
