Comments about Vixen A70Lf Refractor Telescope with Mini Porta Mount:

I bought this scope package after using binoculars and researching for 6 months. Although there are scopes that do more for less, the reviews and claims are all pretty accurate and it is a good first scope.

The optics are very clear, I was able to see the Orion Nebula clearly, the Moon looks awesome, Saturn and Mars are visible(big spheres but not a lot of detail), and I was able to see Jupiter and four of it's moons clearly. The deep sky objects are harder but I'm confident that with the right conditions the scope will come through.

With the scope balanced right, the alt-azimuth mount & tripod is easy to use and pretty smooth. The handles are a tad rough but moving the scope by holding the tube is very smooth. Just be sure not to move it by any parts or areas that are fragile. It doesn't stay exactly where you leave it when you let you go after moving it by hand but it's pretty close.

The two eyepieces it comes with are nice and seemingly a good range, my only complaint is the focuser. It is pretty rough and is hard to dial in. The image bounces around a lot while focusing, even when moving a slowly and gently as possible. You, have to adjust, wait for the image to stop, see if the focus is better, then try again. But, once you get it into focus, it looks really good.

This scope has been good for continuing to learn navigating the stars. And, since the Vixen dovetail joint is fairly standard, I should be able to keep using the tube and the tripod/mount even after I get other scopes.

I am a total astronomy amateur but have been very happy so far. I wouldn't recommend it for small children or for anyone that has never spent time learning the night sky. I'm pretty new but was able to get it setup and find my way around the sky pretty quickly.
