Comments about Ameriwood 2 Drawer Vertical Filing Cabinet - Bank Alder:
For some unexplained reason, file cabinets appear to fetch a higher price than what they should based on the basic design and material content. Having accepted that fact after substantial shopping locally and online, I settled on this Ameriwood cabinet with full understanding that this would be manufactured wood with a vinyl veneer. That's okay give that it will sit in an unused bedroom acting as extra storage. I was however counting on better overall quality based on the product description specifying that it was built of MDF (medium density fiberboard). MDF is a better quality engineered material that is substantially stronger and more shape-stable than particle board. Upon opening the box I found that the entire unit is built with particle board, NOT MDF. I was fairly disappointed but proceeded with assembly. The assembly diagrams were adequate and the hardware was sufficient for the task, but nothing above flat shipped, you-build-it furniture quality. The finish is okay and overall the unit looks as expected once assembled. My second disappointment occurred once I loaded the drawers with hanging files with tabs attached and closed the drawer; the opening of the front face is too small to allow the drawer to close without bending the label tabs substantially forward. They are subjected to equal abuse in the opposite direction when the drawer is opened. My cabinet is for less frequently accessed files so it will suffice, but this was not what was I was hoping for based in the description.
