The product is great. Unfortunately, they failed to read their own instruction book. [...] Instructions specifically say to have composter preassembled and ready when the worms arrive. I ordered two, one as a gift to a sibling, and they had the same experience. Now I have the added expense of additional worms. Lesson learned: don't buy worms as an accessory at the time of purchase of the composter.

The composter itself came very promptly and seems to be of good quality. And my experience with customer service was very satisfactory when I had to call to find out from where to buy worms. (Hay needle is unable to sell worms in PA, something you don't learn until late in the purchase process.)

The reason for the 3star rating is the composter's instructions. There are essentially 3 different sets of instructions that come with the composter and they are confusingly inconsistent. I spent considerably more time trying to make sense of the instructions than I did of actually putting the thing together. Ultimately I wound up declaring the instructions to be more like "guidelines" and muddled through.

And as confusing as the instructions were to get set up, they are woefully inadequate for maintenance of a thriving worm community.

All considered, evidently I did okay because the worms came yesterday and seem to be settling in nicely. At this point only time will tell.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 360 Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black:

The composter went together quickly with the instructions provided, and I used both provided materials and soaked paper strips to get things started. After several months, my worms are thriving on the start-up materials, vegetable scraps from the kitchen, and coffee grounds. They're starting to migrate up to the second tray, into which I've put the most recent scraps.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 360 Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black:

We have had the worm factory in use for a couple of months at this time. With the addition of the full number or worms required, it has been amazing to see how quickly the kitchen waste is being processed. It is being very satisfying to continue composting even our shredded paper. Working great on our apartment patio!

Comments about The Worm Factory® 360 Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black:

This system included everything I needed to be successful with worm composting. Setup was easy, user manual is very informative. I have already harvested two of the four trays and my worm population has doubled. I do a lot of vegetable juicing and love that I can recycle the juicing scraps right here at home...and have great compost and fertilizer when the worms are done!! Within the first month I ordered 2 additional trays and another must have -- coconut coir. Happy composting.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 360 Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black:

I had some worms in a Garden Tower on my deck this summer. As winter approached, I knew it was time to move them in. I purchased The Worm Factory, which has been working great now for several months. It's in my laundry room. No odor or mess. Great support when I had questions about set up.

          Customer Q & A

          1 Question About This Product
Q: "I ordered worms from you and they have arrived before my composter. What should I do with the worms until I get the compost bin?
A: The worms can last up to ten days in the packaging they arrived in. (Not the best, but they will last) Give them some water when they arrive.

If you're afraid they won't make it, you can make a temporary home for them instead. Put the worms into a plastic container about the size of a shoe box or bucket. Put some shredded black and white newsprint in the bottom that has been moistened (about the amount of a rung out sponge). This will act as food and bedding until your compost bin arrives and they can be placed into their new permanent home.
