I've had the Eisenia foetida composting worms for 4 years now and have tried several different styles of composters. During the Iowa winter I keep them in a spare bedroom. Larger compost bins I've tried easily become anerobic or become too heavy for me to move. Last fall I purchased a 5-tray compost bin and have used it in the kitchen all winter. My husband hasn't minded it at all since it doesn't smell and he likes having it closeby to quickly lift the lid and throw in coffe grounds, veggie scraps, banana peels etc.
I enjoy using the wonderful worm castings to mix with potting soil as well as making "tea" to water the plants under my grow lights etc. I have access to free wooden and plastic boxes but have come to realize this 5-tray composter is worth the money. I plan on buying two or three a year until I have enough to throw away my other containers.

I use this worm composter in the basement. The weight of the bins is too heavy as bins appear too compacted and need frequent airation. I like the design of the composter but think the bins should be designed so they are anchored onto the edge of the bins with enough air for the worms without compressing onto the lower bin. I think I'd prefer an open bin rather than this tower design.

Comments about The Worm Factory® 5-Tray Recycled Plastic Worm Composter - Black:

I've been using a basic Rubbermaid like tub for two years now to turn food wasted into soil, and the worms love it. I keep the bin outside for most of the year, and move it inside for winter.

So, I thought it was time to do something more sophisticated.

This system, however, would have taken too long to implement, had a loose fitting lid (flies?), and could not be kept outside. So I felt the need to return it. It was better looking, but not necessary better functioning, at least not right away. For first time compost-ers, I would be a great place to start, but my bin is super easy if not super attractive.

                  Customer Q & A

                  9 Questions About This Product
Q: "How many worms do I need to purchase with the cascade compost bin?"
A: You should purchase about 1,000 worms to start your composter. After this initial purchase, the worm count will double every three months!
Q: "Does the black 5 tier worm composting bin have a cover for the top of bin? If it does is it glass or plastic?"
                  A:

Yes it does come with a Ventilation Tips Lid, and it is plastic.

Q: "In harsher climates, what happens during the winter to the worms?"
A: The worms need to be kept warm.  It would be necessary to move to a indoor location, such as the basement.
Q: "If I put junk mail into the compost bin, does it need to be shredded first?"
A: Yes, any kind of paper needs to be shredded first to speed up the progress.
Q: "Does this process produce any smell?"
A: This process it's totally odorless.
Q: "Need worms, where do I find them?
A: We have live worms for sale, please refer to the following link (http://www.compostbins.com/compost-&-rain-barrel-equipment/compost-equipment/unclejims1000redworms.cfm)
Q: "I ordered worms from you and they have arrived before my composter. What should I do with the worms until I get the compost bin?
A: The worms can last up to ten days in the packaging they arrived in. (Not the best, but they will last) Give them some water when they arrive.

If you're afraid they won't make it, you can make a temporary home for them instead. Put the worms into a plastic container about the size of a shoe box or bucket. Put some shredded black and white newsprint in the bottom that has been moistened (about the amount of a rung out sponge). This will act as food and bedding until your compost bin arrives and they can be placed into their new permanent home.

Q: "Considering 5-tray worm composting bin. is it suitable for outdoors? Would put it in partial sun in Southern California?"
A: The Worm Fatory 5-Tray Worm Composter is intended for temperature ranges of 45 to 85 degrees.
