Comments about Coronado PST - Personal Solar Telescope 0.5A Bandwidth:

After additional viewing with this special little scope, I had to update my review.

Focus with the attached SolarMax40/Tmax is very possible, the image is off focus/alignment in the solfinder but with practice, you can find the sweet spot of the finder and go right to the image.

And speaking of sweet spots, this scope has one too - at high power, the image can be tuned in sharp, with additional care to find the true center of the filtered image to corrospond with your area of viewing on the sun.

A bino is possible and there are correctors available for some models. These items are bulky and will subtract from the viewing experience when working from a motorized mount, although the binoviewer view is exceptional with my experience. But, working with a cover material such as a towel over the head for viewing, it is possible to keep both eyes open when viewing a single eyepiece and this proves more comfortable to viewing long periods.

CEMAX eyepieces are better adapted to solar viewing and have proven to produce a sharper image, although my favorite is a 4.7 meade ultra wide - the image is still fully in view and able to contrast to space around it. With practice I have focused in and found a remarkable image within the aforementioned sweet-spot.

Most importantly to viewing are a previously mentioned viewing chair and a motorized GoTo mount is proving to be indispensable to keep our star aligned correctly for the best possible image when double stacking.

When you realize that we are all alive because of the sun, that we are also made of it, and that the next nearest one is so very far away, it's easy to get caught up in solar-mania! Have fun!

Comments about Coronado PST - Personal Solar Telescope 0.5A Bandwidth:

From what I've seen and used, the PST might be the best made, best performing product for the $ in the industry. WOW - what a cool little scope! I used a PST 1A on a trial period and was blown away with what I not only viewed, but what I learned to see with each viewing. This opened up a new world for me and I began learning about the sun and about what I was seeing. I learned about the .5A and the double stacking and jumped at the chance to get one! I'm hooked on solar - This thing rocks!

The PST .5A is a PST .1A with a screw-on SolarMax 40mm and an adjustable Doppler de-tuner Tmax. The Solarmax appears to allow the viewer a view at more detail at the sun's edge and slightly more overall. The Tmax allows fast moving captured light (by the PST) at the edge (of the Sun) to shift into view as the light moves towards the viewer - as far as I know.

The bad- to be picky- included eyepiece is not anything special, get more power! At least a 12mm should have come with it and also with the reduced focal length, a bino is not possible. Photography with an eyepiece t-adapter is too long a focal length - but to use these optional items in solar viewing thousands more may be spent, proving the value of the PST.

Mounting - I have used a camera tripod and it works great. I started on a Meade DS2000 series scope with a GoTo mount and use it with the PST *See DS2000 series review* Happy Viewing

                      PST .5A Field Review

Comments about Coronado PST - Personal Solar Telescope 0.5A Bandwidth:

                      WOW -

The PST .5A is a PST 1A with an included screw-on SolarMax 40 and an adjustable Doppler shift de-tuner T-Max, which based on my research was like a grand$ back only a few years ago - now we get the PST .5 for about that price and we should be stoked about that - go Meade!

Daytime viewing is very different and exciting with one similar exception - keeping light out! A viewing chair is a must and a towel over the head seems a high tech way to go for now maybe - but just getting started for about a year now.

Let's get the bad out of the way - the included eyepiece - recycle bin that puppy. CE max eyepieces review is not possible at this time (Contrast Enhanced) - No focus for binos and t-adapter eyepiece photography is not happening. The SolarMax goes out of focus on the solfinder so you must set-up, get focused on the sun, and then attach the SolarMax - at great peril in my case being in the concrete jungle. But thats all.

I have gone beyond acceptable focus with a Meade UWA 4.7mm and got a good image after much focusing, lower power was clearer as expected, but the image is very small and you just want to get closer - more so it seems than planetary viewing. "seeing" has developed over a few hours of viewing and lower power is revealing more to the eye.

The sun is said to be entering its 11 year average return to increased activity - YES!

I have mounted this scope on a GoTo Meade DS2000 series telescope mount with some modifications. What a luxury over a camera tripod!

The scope is exceptional! I'm hooked on solar!
