I purchased my Cuisinart EM-200 programmable espresso maker, and was forced to return it after making only 2 cups of coffee. For some reason, it had stopped pumping water, or so it seemed. [...] Because Cuisinart has an excellent reputation (my daughter loves her own Cuisinart regular coffee maker), I purchased the same model as a replacement, and I've been very happy with it. It makes a cup of espresso with the perfect amount of crema; it's easy to use, either as programmed, or reprogrammed to make different amounts than of espresso than it is programmed to make; I now use it at least twice a day, and love it. I loved the milk steamer, too. I have owned other counter-top espresso machines; this is the first that has steamed milk as well as the baristas do on their coffee-house machines.

We started using this machine a few days before Christmas 2010 and it quit working a few days after Christmas 2011, apparently from a faulty circuit board. At [$] I don't expect a top of the line machine, but I do expect more than a single year of life. While it worked, it delivered a good shot of espresso and a very good steamed and frothed milk (despite the wand being awkwardly placed). It was easy to use and clean and looked good on the counter. Too bad it died at such a young age. While I would recommend the machine, it would be with strong reservations.

Comments about Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable Espresso Maker:

Mine expired last night! I opened the housing and determined that the power board transformer had failed - part not available (at least not to me).

It's had almost 5 years of daily use and has performed flawlessly throughout. My primary beverage choice is Americano, long pull. For this drink I simply push the 'Manual' button and wait for the unit to time-out. The crema quotient is rather small and of dubious quality, typically lasting 30 sec. 15 bars may be the limiting factor.

I have used the frother - it's awkward and does a fair job.

Clean-up is easy except for the frothing wand which takes extra care.
The brew head includes a sliding tab to capture the brew basket so it stays put when tapping out the spent grounds. The slide not too well attached and has separated numerous times during dumping. I have to heat it up in v. hot water in order to restore it to its guide channels on the brew head handle.

So, after 5 years of daily use, it still looks new except for the drip tray cover which is well scuffed from use.

I like this unit well enough that I will endeavor to replace it with an identical unit.

Comments about Cuisinart EM-200 Programmable Espresso Maker:

If you've never made espresso, which I hadn't, this concept is something of an art form. I highly suggest watching the included DVD before attempting it. But, with some practice, this has become my all time favorite kitchen appliance! We use it at least daily, if not more. I swear I'm even more popular because of it! My friends love coming over! It's easy to clean and I love the design. If a machine can be "cute," this one is!
