I have been grinding my own coffee for years. But having a machine that does it for me, grinding the beans just before use each morning is really nice. The machine makes very good coffee and the carafe keeps it warm all day. The only downside is that the machine can't make a half pot. But that's no big deal. The only coffee I've had that is truly better is at Ferrara's in Little Italy, in New York (which nothing compares to).

This is the last part I promise. The Manual Has excellent Coffee Information.Oddly enough the manual for this machine has excellent tips and information on coffee. I was rather surprised. This Machine is Huge!I don’t know about you, but my kitchen has limited counter space. This thing is big and tall. Be prepared to find space to accommodate it beyond your old coffee pot’s location. For me the added convenience of the grinder makes it worth it, as does the thermal carafe. Why Make a Cool Reservoir Reader and then Hide it on the Side?I find it troublesome that once my coffee maker is placed, I have to continuously pull it out to read the water level as I’m filling the reservoir. For that matter, I have to pull it out to fill the reservoir. Why can’t the design geniuses come up with a front access for all functions. That way those of us who place the appliance in between other things don’t have to constantly pull it out and move it around to use it. I have seen coffee pots with the water level reader on the front, and for that matter, how hard would it be to make a port in front to pour the water in as well? The Cord is Ridiculously Short.I’m not sure of the logic behind this, unless it sucks so much power that a longer cord kept tripping fuses, but you will need to situate this coffee make within 20 inches of an outlet. Otherwise be prepared to purchase a heavy duty extension cord. Gold Basket Reusable Filter and The Green Movement. As stated in the manual, using the reusable filter leaves silt in your coffee. They try to downplay this, but I can’t stand silt or grounds in my coffee. One of my initial questions was about this and if the maker still could utilize paper filters. The manual was pretty clear about it and had a section on paper filters, but there is still one thing that bothers me about re-usable gold filters. I know re-usable filters are supposed to be more environmentally friendly, but in actuality, there are those of us who will NEVER use them. That means the coffee maker companies wasted time, energy and materials making and shipping me something I will let sit. I could try to give it away or use it for something else, but that means there was still energy lost in moving this inane, stupid thing around. The true way to be environmentally friendly is to only send the filters on request. It could work on default in case this offends anyone, in other words there could be a box I click on to voluntarily not have the filter sent. That way if you are fine with using them you will have one in the order with no extra cyber-paper work. Can Someone Tell Me How the Hell Brew Strength is Supposed to Work? For some reason I will never understand how his feature is supposed to actually work. Doesn’t it seem like if you drip hot water through coffee grounds that it shouldn’t matter how you do it? There is a certain amount of coffee, and an amount of hot water is dripped through it. Oddly enough I tried running it differently to see if I could notice it, and I did. I was also surprised to find out I like the flavor better on the medium setting. Go figure. I asked around a bit but still have no explanation for how this happens, and I worry it is just one more function that can eventually burn out. If anyone know how this works could they tell me? SUMMARY:I feel The DGB900 is a good coffee maker that is almost a great coffee maker. I don’t know if I can say it is worth the [$]. That depends on what is most important to you as a coffee drinker. For me I feel it was worth it, even if it seems like I took this opportunity to complain about the minor details. If the balance of good tasting coffee and the convenience the grinder provides are more important, as in my case, than the several annoying problems it still has, then buy it. It is worth it. There are several problems with this machine that Cuisinart has yet to solve, and perhaps they will take some of my advice in their next few generations of machines. I have yet to find the perfect coffee maker, and this one is reasonably close, even though it is disappointingly not there. On the other hand, if taste and temperature is too much to compromise for you, and If it is too much bother to have to move your coffee to a thermos, which kind of defeats the whole point of paying extra for the thermal carafe to begin with, there are better carafes on less expensive models, and models with out thermals. For me this is the best coffee maker I have found, and will look forward to the improvements as the model evolves. In particular I hope Cuisinart improves the carafe and makes sure the new carafes fit the older models, so I can upgrade. I hope this gives everyone the information they need. I know I would have liked the information, and thanks for the opportunity to submit it.

Comments about Cuisinart DGB-900BC Grind & Brew 12-Cup Automatic Thermal Coffee Maker:

I have owned two, ended up throwing out both. Premium coffee beans clog up the chute which causes the need to be cleaned out after each use. To pour out coffee you need to turn the carafe completely upside down. I would not have minded the price if it would have delivered as advertised, extremely disappointed...still searching for the perfect cup

You have to tip the pot completely upside down of completely empty the pot because of the large plastic flange on the top. You have to take the top off to completely empty the pot.

If you want to waste beans (it uses twice as many as the last Cuisinart unit we had) and get to completely clean the grinding/transfer mechanism - after every use - then you will love this machine.

Comments about Cuisinart DGB-900BC Grind & Brew 12-Cup Automatic Thermal Coffee Maker:

Good thing about this automatic coffee maker is waking up to fresh coffee in the morning ready for your not yet functioning self, all you need to do is grab a mug, pour, then sip. It also holds about a half a pound of un-ground beans. But I expected more for the money with less hassle. However the first worst part of this machine is that the coffee comes out just above warm, not hot enough. So by the time you put your milk or creamer in it you end up with a nearly room temperature cup of coffee that ends up in the microwave to re heat it. (Why buy good beans if you need to nuke them and ruin their flavor and aroma?) The second part that is frustrating is how slowly it brews and you end up with grinds on the pouring spout and lid of the carafe. The third is how slowly the coffee pours from the carafe and feels empty. So when you open the lid you find almost a half a cup of coffee at the bottom of the pot. The carafe is designed poorly - needs a hard tilt to get coffee out, oh and did I mention it's slow? The last is there is no adjustment for how fine or coarse you may want your beans ground for optimal flavor and find the factory setting too coarse and uses much more coffee than would be necessary.

Comments about Cuisinart DGB-900BC Grind & Brew 12-Cup Automatic Thermal Coffee Maker:

This appliance advertised all the features I was looking for; burr grinder, insulated pot, and preset timer.

Unfortunately, you must monitor the unit while the coffe is grinding. On occasion, not all the beans are captured leaving you with a very weak pot of coffee.

The basket for the grounds is not large enough to make more than about 8 cups at a time although the unit is supposed to make up to 12 cups.

The insulated pot does not keep the coffee very hot for very long. The design of the spout makes pouring a cup of coffee difficult and rather slow. You can only pour the last cup or two by turning the pot all the way upside down. You also need a sponge on a handle to clean it. Unless you have small hands, you will not be able to fit your hand inside to wash the interior.

It's not horrible, but just not the upgrade from Mr. Coffee that I was hoping it would be.
