Considering cost vs value, this bookcase fits the bill. Got two of the 48" bookcases. Fit and finish was a little lower quality than I was hoping for. There are gaps at many of the joints and even the thin plywood back board would not square with the back of the bookcase. However, considering the rising cost of wood, wood products (even composit and laminate), the price is on par with others in the markeplace. Was pleased to get a 5 percent discount for purchasing two. Shipping was fast and no major damage during shipment.

The unit that came had a much darker veneer than that shown, but the worst part is the construction. The back panel is 4 pieces of thinnest plywood I've ever seen held together by cheap brown packing tape. The joined edges show in the middle of each shelf opening and have ragged edges on the plywood and veneer. The unit needs the back panel screwed on (all 22 screws) and the intermediate shelves installed before it has any structural strength; I nearly broke the frame laying it down to install the back "panel". It heavy and has to be moved gently as there is no bottom support on the back side; you have the two sides for support and a front panel screwed onto the raised bottom shelf. I bought better to-be-assembled furniture for my first apartment right out of high school when all I could afford was the cheapest thing I could find. As is this wasn't enough, the unit didn't come with any assembly instructions, only a picture on the box. If this is the level of quality to be expected at Hayneedle.com's products I will never shop here again.

Comments about Concepts in Wood Double Wide Wood Veneer Bookcase - Red Oak:

The materials sent are much darker than shown, and thus did not blend will with other oak pieces. Also, there were two left sides but no right side, and the capping on the vertical center piece was largely torn off. The customer service did promise prompt replacements.

Comments about Concepts in Wood Double Wide Wood Veneer Bookcase - Red Oak:

The piece is beautiful but contrary to expectations it was not at all easy to assemble and required almost 3 hours and much too much effort before it was done. Also, with the overhang on the shelves, the smaller unit doesn't hold that many books.

I paid for expedited shipping and the box came on time -- However, upon opening the left side of the bookcase was broken. I contacted the shipper and they said it would take 5 to 7 days to send a new side. Why did I pay for expedited shipping?
