Bought this for my wife, who was having issues with our older, very firm, flat-topped mattress. For her, the 3-inch thickness was the right choice - she has slept well and comfortably in spite of back issues for the month or so we've used it. For myself, I prefer the hard, firm surface of the original mattress, and since I easily perspire, I think the deep foam contributes to a warmer environment, which may be a plus for many users. I may simply cut the queen-size foam longitudinally, and we can both be comfortable.
There is no question that the material is well designed and manufactured, and I can imagine many people could put off the expense of a new mattress indefinitely by using these Memory Foam Toppers.
