Comments about Explore Scientific AR102 f/6.5 Air-Spaced Doublet Achromatic Refractor Telescope:

Well, I purchased this scope because I wanted a refractor that I could use at home for when the moon is up and I wanted to go Double Star hunting. Well, I have had the scope out twice in my backyard and I am very happy with my purchase. On the first outing I was able to see the Cassini Division on Saturn's Rings and two bands on Saturn. Leo 54, a double star in Leo was magnificent the first night out showing a gold and bluish companion. M65 and M66 in Leo were visible. M13 in my 7mm Pentax XW was wonderful!

The second outing I focused on lunar observations and did a sketch using the scope that I actually liked. I found it easier to move the AR102 on a Twilight I mount (from Explore Scientific that I purchased here) than my 10 or my go to scope, my 14 inch dob. I looked at Regulus, Algebia, Mizar, two other doubles in Ursa Major; M51 and its companion showed! Finally I did the double double in Lyra and ended with Alberio and Saturn.

Pros of this scope are its ease of use. The two speed focuser is really nice, and I like the handle also. It is much larger thanks to the dew shield on the end. The straight through finder will work, but I must have a 9x50 RACI on it and since I have an extra, yep, its on there. Makes it much easier when one goes to zenith or in that part of the sky. Oh, I did purchase a filter to get rid of the violet and green from the scope when looking at the moon and bright objects like planets. I had anticipated that so I was content to have the filter. I can see many a non new moon nights now for a couple of hours being spent in my backyard using this scope. That and I just might redo the Messier objects with it and sketch it one again.

Last note. If you are buying this for deep sky objects in a suburban area, be careful. You need a train eye to see and capture many of the brighter DSO's in this scope. You can do it, but you have to kinda of know what to look for or be out when the moon isn't up. You can do it, just be warned it is not like looking at DSO's through a 8 inch or 10 inch dob in your backyard. For me though, I will really enjoy it and I cannot wait to get it to a dark site for some wide field sketching of the Milky Way in Sagittarius, Scorpius etc. What a wonderful scope ES put together here. Oh yea, with the mount, the scope is very easy to transport and set up. Much easier than my ten inch or 14 inch dobs. Don't take me wrong, the 14 inch is my main telescope but this is going to see good use as well.

Bought as a grab and go scope for educational outreach programme's......I do own both a 80 mm / 100mm TMB APO which I consider both superbly crafted instruments .....optically near perfection...

            The incredible shock!!!!!!
first light was last year......I was taken aback at the razor sharp images of the lunar surface....contrast
was comparable to scopes costing twice as much.....Jupiter revealed distinct festoons, barges , and a
spectacular view of the GRS ... Jupiter's moons were distinct and revealed a radiant disc ....

Carry handle and dovetail included with the rings is a nice touch.
As is the 2 inch focuser and diagonal with compression rings instead of set screws.
Focuser is also much better than what you would expect with a factory scope. Tension adjustable and lockable.

Only complaint I have is the finderscope. It's GOT to be replaced with a right angle scope. I'd rather this one not be included at all.
