The finderscope is the only thing I can honestly complain about. I solved that by installing a Celestron Star Pointer Finderscope. Now it's simple to find objects.

I have seen nice views of the moon, the bands of Jupiter, the Flame Nebula, and many other wonders. Once I got the feel for using an equatorial mount, things became much easier.

The images submitted were my first try at imaging. Jupiter in the 10mm Eyepiece was much brighter and sharper.

I'm an amateur astronomer and have a good deal of experience with more advanced telescopes. I bought this for my nephew as an introductory scope. Overall, I'm very pleased with the mirror optics and mount. It delivers good views of the planets and the Orion Nebula. The mount and focusing are stable. The telescope seems mostly rugged and is relatively lightweight.

The main con: I read about people having problems with the finderscope, and can confirm that the finder is absolutely a nightmare. For starters, the battery casing was broken and I could not get the finder to work. Others online recommended taking it apart to solder a wire that tends to break inside the battery compartment. Sure enough, I opened it up and found the wire broken. The finder lit up after I soldered the connector back together. I was shocked to discover that the design of the finder is completely useless for pointing the telescope in the dark. The red dots are not even remotely comparable to better designed Telrad or even Celestron red dot (1x dot projected at infinity) finders. To point the finder, you have to line up two red dots and while your eye is focused on the sky it is impossible to focus on the red dots. So, after trying for several hours, I was unable to calibrate the red dots such that they would help me to point the scope in the correct place. Instead, I had to get it approximately in the correct part of the sky and then scan around. This was frustrating for me, and I know it would be very frustrating for a new user. If you buy this telescope, it is extremely important to also buy and install a finder that works, such as the Celestron red dot finder.

My other complaint concerns the poor quality of the 20 mm eyepiece. It was lightweight, plastic, and inverts the image (bad for astronomical viewing). While the image of the orion nebula was pleasant, the 20 mm does not provide an exceptionally wide field of view. To get the most out of this telescope, consider buying a 40 mm super plossl. You'll be able to see through the scope easier, see the whole moon, and find small objects that are hard to hit with higher magnification. The 10 mm eyepiece was acceptable, but will not deliver a very high level of magnification. Consider also buying a 2x or 3x barlow to enlarge the planets and to use with your 40 mm plossl or just buy a 5 mm plossl eyepiece.

Aside from the finder and the eyepiece, the telescope was a good deal at the discounted price, but I would not recommend buying this scope without also buying a better finder.

Comments about Celestron AstroMaster 114 EQ Reflector Telescope:

First telescope, for a beginner with no prior experience with telescopes. This is a great beginner scope with incredible sights. The first night I had it, we spotted the moon, Venus and Jupiter (with three moons showing clearly!). Such breathtaking sights has us hooked and we'll be upgrading next year to a much bigger mirror.

The construction itself is great, although I have trouble rotating the OTA around to get the sights on the side nearest me.

The finderscope works great, night or day, but came severely out of synch. I'm sure the instructions show how align it, but I'm stubborn and said "I don't need no instructions! I'm a MAN!"..... boy, was I wrong. After correctly aligning, there's no trouble finding anything, from planets to nebula. Birds or stars. Everything send to just line up perfectly.

The equatorial mount is DEFINITELY advanced. It's not an easy thing to learn for noobies. I wish it had something on the bottom, where it screws onto the tripod, to keep the whole thing from rotating. I can't get it any tighter, yet it easily rotates around this axis, throwing off polar alignment.

The lenses look good quality to me, but the sizes could have been better planned. If a person gets a barlow lens, like I did, the sizes conflict. But, nonetheless, there are no other problems I see.

For the price, this was well spent. I also purchased the motor drive and a set of lenses that perfectly blended into this set. I will be purchasing another telescope soon from you all!

Comments about Celestron AstroMaster 114 EQ Reflector Telescope:

The mount is the only part of the deal tha may make this a wrth while purchase, Mirrors are ok..cant collimate this scope, this is a bird jones design, any amatuer that knows anything about these type of scopes knows they are poor performers, and you will never get a IN focus object no matter what you do.
Light doesnt come to a point ...EVER in a Bird Jones design...look it up folks..
The scope itself is cute, I love the look, the mount is very good and th tripod, not awful, very decent in fact.
This may an okay grab and go scope, for quick looks at the moon..and planets, Does an okay view of the moon for sure.,.planets are a disappointment for sure.
Star clusters suffer, some faint fuzzies are okay.

Finder scope, ..ashame its built into the scope..just buy another finder..
