This drive is essential unless you like fighting to keep objects in your eyepiece. It's also a must for astrophotography. I only wish it was slightly smaller so it wouldn't interfere with the scope movement as much. Other than that, it tracks well and is worth every penny!

I bought this along with the Celestron AstroMaster 114 EQ Reflector Telescope as a quick and easy rig for basic viewing while I do photography with my larger scope. Unfortunately it's really turned out to be more trouble than it's worth. The housing severely limits the range of positions to which the EQ mount can be adjusted, knocking out whole regions of the sky. If it was more easily removed or better yet could be easily swapped to the other side of the RA axis, it might be ok, but as-is, it's just too inconvenient. Added the fact that the first unit I received [...] wouldn't run the RA fast enough to track, I just can't give this a high recommendation.

Awesome...but remember you need to have your Telescope set up right first....then a good Star Finder ...after that point to a star .. cluster .. planet ..ect then turn the motor drive on -fine tune ..and enjoy your viewing experience...point-and-click

Comments about Celestron Motor Drive for AstroMaster/PowerSeeker EQ Telescopes:

I've not gotten much use out of this little guy. Bought it with my Astromaster 114 and have tried using it every night.

For starters, despite being shown in the picture, you cannot actually use the RA fine tune knob with this motor. The motor locks up, wether it's turned off or not, and won't let you fine tune. That mashes little sense, as I'm never DIRECTLY on what I'm looking at, and frequently need to adjust it.

The motor has a little dial to turn to adjust how fast, or slow, the device turns. That also makes little sense, unless you're using it to look at the moon. Having settings, or at least little notches for preset speeds would be much nicer. I'm constantly having to adjust the motor because I can't seem to get it just right.

Finally, the screws holding the motor to the RA are funky. Hand tightening just doesn't cut it. You really have to use a screw driver to get it right, or it'll wiggle off. The second screw requires a tiny allen wrench, I thankfully had one, and was also loose after my first night.

This, is probably not needed for a beginner scope. If you're purchasing the scope, and need to save a little cash, this is where to do it.

This device works great and is easy to use and set up. However if you want to look south at the planets it gets in the way.

It was in the way. The gear box should a release clutch. When this is attached you completely sacrifice your right ascension fine adjustment, thus making target acquisition nearly impossible. I am designing my own release system, but in the mean time this is a cumbersome brick.

Comments about Celestron Motor Drive for AstroMaster/PowerSeeker EQ Telescopes:

This came along with the Celestron 114EQ bundle.

Installation isn't too complicated; everything is pretty basic.

              It's utility, however, is questionable.

There's no way to know what the 'right' tracking speed is; you kind of have to keep an eye on it over time to make sure that what you're watching is still within frame.

              Definitely not for astrophotographers.

If the motor is running too slow and your object is speeding out of view, turn it clockwise. If your motor is running to fast and the object is moving out of frame, turn it counterclockwise. There is no middle; you're constantly having to adjust.

And sometimes, I'm not even 100% certain that it's actually moving.

Pros: Easy to install, simple directions, takes a 9V battery

Cons: no basic tracking setting; constantly having to adjust. very noisy. bulky; often gets in the way.
