About Hoover
James Murray Spangler was a department store janitor in Canton, Ohio who liked to tinker with gadgets in his spare time. An asthma sufferer, Spangler believed the carpet sweeper at work was aggravating his condition. Not one to suffer in silence, Spangler took action and began making alterations and additions to the carpet sweeper design until he constructed a prototype all his own. The Electric Suction Sweeper worked so well that he had it patented. Soon he was producing 2 Electric Suction Sweepers a week out of his home. After his friends and cousins, the Hoovers, gave it a shot, everything changed. Spangler sold his patent to his cousin and continued to invent new patents for the company.
