The materials the unit is made of are solid and heavy but I guess in an effort to minimize and standardize the variety of hardware provided the main type of screw was in some cases too short to hold some things together so I had to get longer screws. Also the wooden dowels were noticeably smaller in diameter than the holes they were supposed to go into so they were wobbly. The combination of these two shortcomings made for a possible unstable and loose piece of furniture. When I build something I like it to be solid and only coming apart with a lot of hits with a heavy sledgehammer. The construction is not easy but the instructions are straight-for-ward enough with the pictures being adequate all by themselves even though written explanations were provided. I do not mind a do it yourself challenge but this may not be right for an amateur. The delay with having to make a trip to the hardware store added more time and inconvenience to what should have been an average project. Since I got this kitchen island at a very reasonable price I give it a good rating. I would recommend it to a skilled handy friend but because of the hardware hassles not at what was it's full price.

i just received this two days ago. I spent most of the day yesterday building it. I started at around 9:30 am and finished after 3:00 pm. I did nearly everything with an everyday phillips head screwdriver. I did not attach the knife block, I have no use for it. Here are my pros and cons:

Pros:

Very nice looking once finished.
Provides much needed storage space.
The wood pieces themselves seem very solid (except one, which came cracked. it was usable anyway, so I didn't bother complaining about it).
The wheels work well.
The front wheels have brakes that work.
The price was ok (I got it on sale).
My dining room looks much more presentable now (less clutter).

Cons:

It wasn't easy to construct. Using a power tool would have shortened the process, but there's one part that involves a really short screwdriver. I don't have one.
The drawers are difficult to install. The instructions don't tell you this, but once you line up the tracks, you need to shove the drawers in. Use force. Then it will be fine.
The sliding chopping board didn't fit in properly, so I installed it upside down. It is now a seriously shallow drawer. I prefer it that way, but it doesn't look quite as neat when closed as it should.
The hardware was a real problem. Fortunately, I have a collection of longer screws at home. The standard screw "B" was too short to hold some important pieces together. The wooden dowels do not fit snugly in the holes and aren't much help.
There were a couple of alignment problems with holes for bolts. I solved this by removing the surrounding dowels, which seemed kinda pointless anyway.
The hinges for the doors seem a bit resistant, but they are fully functional.

All in all, it was a pain to put together (and I have lots of experience putting together furniture, so this is not a newbie problem). Once I got past that, though, I really like the piece. It serves its intended function and looks nice. I do not recommend spending a lot of money on this model.

Comments about Belham Living Kerner Kitchen Island Work Center with Optional Stools:

Received kitchen island with broken counter top and side piece. The screws that were provided to assemble the product where inadequate to short wouldn't hold pieces together. Had to purchase longer screws. Andrew in their customer service department was rude and condescending ..
