Comments about Vixen Lanthanum Wide LVW Telescope Eyepieces:

this review is from a guy new to astronomy. i'm using a 5.1" newtonian reflector and a casual stargazer. i frequently use my LVW over a my Plossl 6mm eyepiece even on watching the moon and planets (jupiter, venus, saturn). although there maybe other similar eyepieces out there, but i'm currently waiting for my LVW 22mm to arrive.

Comments about Vixen Lanthanum Wide LVW Telescope Eyepieces:

Got this eyepiece the minute it came on clearance sale. The original price was not worth it because this eyepiece was not up to that price in quality.

Honestly i see too many similarities between this eyepiece and the baader hyperion clone line. The baader having just a hair more field of view, while the LVW being a hair sharper. Most people wouldn't really see the difference though.

If money is not an object, sure this eyepiece is a decent addition to many collections. But if you are looking to get just a few good high quality eyepieces for a decent focal range set, i would pass on this LVW and look at a few others.

    Superb Eyepieces for SCT Users

    Pros

    • Excellent Eye Relief
    • Extremely comfortable

    Cons

      Best Uses

      • DSOs
      • Longer focal scopes

Comments about Vixen Lanthanum Wide LVW Telescope Eyepieces:

I have owned many high end eyepieces. While one might parse the small differences in edge performance, throughput, lateral color, and contrast, the LVWs win hands down in overall viewing comfort. They have no kidney beaning or blackout issues and eye placement is not critical. Optimal focus is easy to find and the eye relief is generous and as stated. These would be great for beginners or for use at star parties for that reason. I'm at the point in the hobby where viewing comfort is most important and the LVWs give that to me above all others.

      Pros

      • Seems sturdy

      Cons

      • Focus shift toward edge

      Best Uses

      • Larger objects and finder

Comments about Vixen Lanthanum Wide LVW Telescope Eyepieces:

Last night was my first use. The lens was sharp except toward the edges the focus shifted, but i was able to adjust slightly and get it closer in.
I got it mainly to be able to fit things like the Subaru cluster and find other larger clusters when the goto feature of my scope is a little bit off. I was quite happy with the lens, but feel the price was a little on the high side. It should do well when i am doing corporate or school star tours.
