About Mele
Emidio Mele, an Italian immigrant to the United States, came to New York City in 1896 and learned to make jewelry boxes as an apprentice before founding Mele Manufacturing in 1912. He began by designing and building elegant displays for jewelry store windows. His jewelry box-making business grew throughout the 1900s, responding to demands for boxes to hold Purple Hearts during WWII and developing as a popular household name for quality jewelry boxes. Today Mele Jewelry Box is known as the Mele Companies, which encompass various divisions under the Mele name. Now based in Utica, N.Y., Mele still upholds the family atmosphere on which it was founded and remains America's foremost name in jewelry cases.

This is a nicely built wooden box. However, the little ballerina did not turn nor the music play. I called and a replacement was promptly sent out. This second box had a twirling ballerina, complete with music, but the mirror was defective. It looked scratched; however, upon closer inspection I found the mirror was actually warped plastic! For such a well constructed box, it is a shame such cheap "mirrored" material and musical mechanism was used.

I have been looking for a nice ballerina jewelry box for my niece to give her for her first dance recital. I didn't want anything too "cutsie", but this is very elegant. I wanted something that will last for years and something more of a "keepsake". I LOVE this jewelry box. It is very well made, the quality is exceptional. I looked at other plastic and cardboard boxes and they don't come close to this one and the price for what you are getting is very competetive. The only thing I have to mention is that the mirror is defective, this is the second one I buy (from a different store) and it has the same problem. It almost seems that it's not a real mirror it looks more like some type of plastic (maybe for safety reasons). Both the boxes that I have purchased had a rectangular streak across the mirror. The box I purchased from hayneedle is less noticable but you can still see it's defective, other than that, this box is an exceptional buy, believe me, I shopped around until I found the best price for the best product. I highly reccomend this product! I know my niece is going to Love it!
