I had this same hose reel for 3 or 4 years and really liked it. The hose feed slot is at the bottom which helps to keep the reel from tipping over when pulling the hose out. I previously had a top feeding hose reel that tipped over ever time I pulled the hose out. My first reel like this one did eventually fail. The mechanism that directs the hose back and forth across the reel broke after a couple of years, but this didn't affect my ability to use the reel. Finally, I broke the crank handle when drying to un-jam the reel. I was gald to find another to replace the old one.

(I have bought, installed, and used a total of six hose reels of this type: three of this model and three of the Suncast brand; all of which have 200'+ capacity; all of which have the hose tracking feature; all used by different people and in different circumstances, and up to 8 years of usage. As such, the following observations represent a lot of experience and more than one person's perspective.) Following are my observations: All-plastic construction except for the aluminum water pipe. The aluminum pipe is probably a good idea as the plastic pipe on one of the Suncast units failed. (To their credit, Suncast replaced it right away without question.) The housing is sturdy enough, but the working components - reel handle and hose guide especially - are of light-duty plastic; almost cheesy, given the high price. The handle has broken on one and the tracking device has broken on one. Owner's Manual instructions for use are grossly inadequate for actual use in real-world conditions. The housing must be anchored by the user or to a base (ground, pad, deck, etc.) if more than minimal length of hose is used; otherwise it moves around clumsily when you try to reel in the hose. The hose connection on the reel is at the wrong angle, so it puts stress on the hose right at the connection causing it to break eventually; even with heavy-duty, premium hose. You must unlock the hose tracking device prior to pulling out the hose; otherwise you'll strip or break the device if you pull the hose at anything more than a slight angle. When using the hose tracking device (locked position), you must make sure the hose is being reeled straight in, not at an angle; otherwise the hose tracking device may strip and/or break. That hazard increases with heavier and/or longer-length hose. I could go on, but those are the more important cautionary things. Other observations: Very limited access to hose reel and connection. The only open area is at the bottom, so you have to upend the unit to get at the reel - to disconnect or untangle the hose (a common occurrence if you're not very careful when reeling it in); so if you anchor the unit to keep it from going squirrely when you reel in the hose, that becomes a time-consuming task. The crank is on the left as you face the unit from the front, which would be fine if you're left-handed, except that you have to crank it clockwise to reel in the hose, which is awkward. If you're right-handed, it's awkward unless you crank while standing at the rear of the unit, which is also awkward if you want to keep your hose from kinking as it is reeled in through the hose tracking device. The Suncast crank is on the right as you face it, and it cranks clockwise, so you can manage the hose with your left hand while cranking comfortably with your right hand, which makes much more sense. I don't have time and patience to go over all the design flaws in this product; they're too numerous to mention here. It ought to be redesigned and beefed-up. In the meantime, I would recommend that you try to find a better product. Unfortunately, though easier to use, the Suncast product isn't built much better. For example, the crank handle broke on all three of mine (one had only 100 feet of light-duty hose!), and Suncast would not replace the crank. Shame on them, as I found out that it's a very common problem with that product. I ended up mending it with epoxy and installed a long bolt in the crank handle to reinforce it. It's worked flawlessly since. Now, if I can do that; why can't the manufacturer???? Bottom line: it's a short-term, light-duty product that works well enough if you use only short, light-duty hose, are very careful with the hose tracking device, and don't mind its awkwardness. Otherwise you'll end up frustrated and throwing it out after a season or two of use.

I purchased this reel to replace the identical one that I currently have. The current reel lasted 6 years with fairly hard use, but the winder handle broke off. This is one of the few reels available with holes in the base to allow mounting to a deck.

I was a little offset by the reviews, but I have not had any issues with this hose reel. I originally purchased it more for its look instead of its function. When I opened the box I was happy with the style, and now after using it I am very happy with how well it works.

This is the second hose reel I have purchased through the years. I purchased this unit two years ago. The paul in the level winding device is not adequate for the task. I have a 95 foot 5/8" hose installed on the rack. the paul or piece that rides in the track is fragile and has broken twice. This seems to be a common problem. When retrieving the hose it needs to be pulled in straight and not at an angle. Even doing this the piece has broken twice. I have called AMES and they are sending the second replacement part. Will give it one more shot before trashing the unit and trying something else. Will do more research for next time.

This may have been a great product, but it came broken. This was my first purchase from Hayneedle, so I am not impressed. Although, the issued was resolve quickly. Good Job on that.
I will not reorder this product. It cane in no packaging whatsoever.
The mailing labels were just put on the cart. That is probably why is was broken.

The hose constantly tangles and is impossible to either pull out or reel back in. Do not waste your money or time on this one. No matter how painstakingly you try to keep the hose neat and straight it tangles. If I could i would give it. -5

Just received the hose reel unit. Looks great and feels like it is heavy duty and we look forward to using it. The unit was fully assembled when received and the hose hookups were easy and straight forward. Directions were provided and they were easy to follow. Connected the hoses to both the unit and the faucet, turned on the water and no leaks. Just what I wanted to see. The unit is attractive and sets well out front of the house.

I've been looking for a sturdy hose box for a while. So many a cheaply made. The connections are brass not plastic! Last two plastic connection boxes I had would pop off if the water pressure was very high. It was very easy to attach the hose and with the auto feed it was very easy to wind hose on reel. It is also very pretty . Nice bonus.

Must be designed for left handed people as the crank must be used left handed or clumsily by a right handed person. Rewind is very difficult. It was advertised as metal and the only part that is medal is the hose connections. Lid does not lift and it is difficult to load hose as it requires loading with the product up side down. No way to see if the hose is rewinding properly after it has been loaded and used. Nice looking flimsey platic device that is poorl;y designed.
