There is a reason why this is called a rug and not a mat. It is sturdy like a rug but proportional to a dog bowl placemat. It absorbs any water that makes its way out of the bowl while keeping the floor beneath it nice and dry. Food is also contained on the mat, so there is little possibility of it being accidentally kicked or stepped on. It is well worth the extra cost, and I'm glad I purchased it.
