I decided to try a solar powered birdbath made out of resin since it would be easier to clean. Last year I purchased a birdbath made out of aluminum, and it was painted; it uses a 110 volt pump. I buried a power cable underground with a timer to turn the pump on and off and that worked great. I also bought a DIG EZ Program Hose End Timer that fits on a faucet and uses a 9 volt battery to add water to my birdbath four times a day. I ran underground a 1/2 inch drip hose and then tapped into it with a 1/4 drip tube and three 4 gallon emitters. I have set the timer to add water for a minute to top off the water in my birdbath. In the summer, I increase the timer to run for 2 minutes. This is an excellent way to add water to your birdbath. After all the work I did, I was very disappointed that after three months the paint started to chip off of this birdbath, and it was awful to clean. At that time I thought of replacing it with a resin birdbath but decided to wait.I have seen the reviews of the Portsmouth birdbath, and most were very positive and decided to buy it. [...] I had it in place in less than 20 minutes. Since it runs on solar power, all I had to do was tap into my drip tubing and add another line to this birdbath. As the DIG timer goes on, it fills both birdbaths and I never have to worry about them getting low on water.I placed my Portsmouth birdbath in the front yard but have a small Pygmy Date Palm about four feet away from the birdbath. I have noticed with fall approaching that when the sun hits the solar panel at 9 AM I start to see the pump working, and by 3 PM the birdbath is shaded by the palm and the fountain stops working. I don’t mind that because I still have my other birdbath, and the birds still come to this one to bathe and drink water. I found that the spray head scared away the birds and so I just have the water bubble from the top.I have been really happy with this birdbath until last week when the pump stopped working. I cleaned the pump and impeller twice, and it still does not work. I have only used this for two weeks, and I am very disappointed that such a great product has such a cheap faulty pump.I called Smart Solar the company that makes the pump, and they said that they will mail me a replacement but that it is on backorder [...] !It is very bad that a company puts out a nice quality birdbath and then supplies a cheap pump. [...] I have decided to buy another pump to use for now until my replacement pump comes in. I decided to order a pump with a separated solar panel that I can put out in the sun to get power to the pump for a longer period of time.I have some photos of the birds bathing in the birdbath that was taken out of my front window. Overall, I like the birdbath and the resin material. It is easy to clean and will not be a problem like my painted birdbath is. I would recommend this product, but hopefully they will make an improvement in the pump design so that it will last longer than two weeks.

Comments about Smart Solar Portsmouth Solar Bird Bath Fountain:

The fountain works well and the birds will hear the flowing water. The fountain top must be screwed on to work properly; it doesn't splash water, but sprays enough to be pleasing. I followed directions and made certain to connect wires so the red rubber ring would seal the connection & prevent water from harming the battery. I also did not turn it on for 2 days as recommended to enable the solar battery to charge. I am very pleased with the height, weight and mechanics of the fountain for this price

Comments about Smart Solar Portsmouth Solar Bird Bath Fountain:

This was my first time ordering from Hayneedle. My product was shipped promply and arrived in good shape, thanks to proper packing. I love the "bubbling" aspect of the water. The birdbath is easy to assemble and is very stable. Also, it looks as attractive as the picture depicts.

Comments about Smart Solar Portsmouth Solar Bird Bath Fountain:

This is as attractive as pictured and was easy to assemble. I am hopeful that the unit will function for the long-run (at least one season) before the pump (which looks a bit flimsy) fails.
Even when the water is not flowing, the fountain is attractive. So far the birds have not flocked to it but because it looks good and enhances the appearance of my very small garden, I am satisfied with the purchase.

Comments about Smart Solar Portsmouth Solar Bird Bath Fountain:

I have had this bird bath for about 3 weeks now & I have mixed feelings on it. It's a bit shorter than I thought it would be (my fault for not grasping the dimensions), but it's sturdy and fits in to my garden well. The bath itself seems like it would be the perfect depth and shape for birds to enjoy themselves, but I've only seen 3 birds at it so far and they were all on the edge before I startled them away.

I never did figure out how the on demand part worked so would skip if I made this purchase again. The solar plate is SUPER sensitive to any shade or cloud cover. It was off more than it was on. My brilliant hubby took the solar battery out and put in a pond pump so now it is on all day at least. I'll eat the small electricity costs to hear and see it on - it does sound lovely burbling away.

I put a flat rock on one side so maybe with that and now leaving it alone will encourage the birds to come!

Fountain looks great and probably could have been a great purchase if it would only work! I followed all instructons to the letter, including trying a manual start with no luck.I wlll be calling for return authorization. I had my eye several other solar items which I will not now plan to puchase because of this disappointing experience with hayneedle first purchase.

            Customer Q & A

            20 Questions About This Product
Q: "How much water does this bowl hold?"
A: This bowl holds about 1 gallon of water.
Q: "Can the spray pattern be altered?"
A: Yes, there is a 2 inch extender tube at the base that can be removed to decrease the distance the water shoots out.
Q: "Is this solar panel attached to the bird bath or can you set it up a few feet away?"
A: The solar panel must sit in the bowl of the bird bath. It is the dark square that is shown in the picture.
Q: "Does this pump get bogged down by a lot of build-up or by being in a high humidity environment?"
A: This pump does have a filter to prevent build-up. However, it should still be cleaned every month or two, depending on the level of build-up.
Q: "Is the pump replaceable if it breaks?"

            The pump is replaceable.

Q: "Can I just buy the solar pump and not the whole birdbath?"
A: Unfortunately we do not offer the solar parts separately.
Q: "I live in the Northeast and its freezing outside now. Does this birdbath actually run water in the freezing temps? If so, how? Can you describe for me the installation for this birdbath without using electricity for the colder temps? Thanks?"
A: In winter, the Solar Bird Bath Water Fountain's pump and panel must be stored in a dry and frost-proof environment.
Q: "I am looking for a solar powered bird bath that uses the solar panel for heating, so that it won't freeze in the winter months. I have not been able to find one, but I did notice that some products have "winterizing plate". What is that? will that keep the water thawed in the winter? Any help will be greatly appreciated?"

Our solar fountains are not used to heat as the solar panel is used as an energy source to run the fountain.  It will require direct sunlight.  A winterizing plate is a cover for the indentation in the top of the fountain where the pump and solar panel rest.  During the winter months if you leave the fountain outside you will need to remove the solar panel and pump and put the winterization plate in. This will prevent water from getting into the reservoir, freezing and then cracking the bird bath.

To heat the water in the winter months, we suggest purchasing a separate bird bath heater, such as item API016.

Q: "What is the weight of the birdbath, or can you add weight to it? Just so it doesn't flip over and break.
A: This bird bath weighs 20 lbs.  You can add some additional landscaping to assist in stabilizing.
Q: "Can I just buy the solar fountain without the birdbath? Thanks?"
A: Unfortunately we do not sell the solar panels separate.
Q: "Can a light shining on the solar plate generate enough power to operate the pump in the evening?"
A: At this time no light can simulate sun light so this will not work.
Q: "Where is this product manufactured?"
A: The Portsmouth Solar Bird Bath Fountain is manufactured in China.
Q: "Do they sell just the solar plate for my existing birdbath to turn it into a fountain?"
A: We don't sell any single or independent solar panels like the one used on this birdbath, however we have some solar fountain kits that could work for you, items ST057 and BNP060
Q: "Do you offer replacement parts for your solar fountains?"
A: Unfortunately we do not offer replacement parts. Please contact Smart Solar directly at 813-343-5775.
Q: "What color is it & what is it made of?"

This birdbath is a gray resin material.

Q: "Does this fountain only work when the sun is shining on it, or does it have a storage devise? If so, what time capacity?"

Our On-Demand option will store energy for use when the sun isn't shining.  We have included this info in our product information.

Q: "Does the water fountain have an automatic pump shut off if water is low in the reservoir,or will the pump run dry and be permanently damaged?"

There is no automatic shut off for water level.  The pump will stop running when not in direct sunlight.  You will need to routinely check the water level in the fountain.

Q: "Why do fountains loose water - i seem to have to refill my almost everyday?"
A: Evaporation from the sun or animals/birds drinking the water.
Q: "Can the base be filled with sand for stability?"
A: There is no access to add the sand.
Q: "How deep is the bowl of the Portsmouth solar birdbath?"
A: The bowl is about 2-3 inches deep.
