I read the reviews for this product on a number of sites and the concensous is pretty much spot on. The material is stiff but not rigid. The underside (against your seat) is very similar to kitchen drawer lining, you know the soft slide resistant stuff. The top side is nice but definitely not slide resistant but that is why Latch was created. The only reason for the -1 star is the width. Definitely watch this if you plan to put 2 side by side or you have smaller sized captains chairs in your minivan. Somewhat related to that is the lip. Good in its purpose though there could be some additional cutouts for the latch system. On my minivan the latch is low and therefore the lip is pressed flat in the rear by the latch cable.
Overall a good investment that I expect to easily last the 8 more years of car seats left to come.
