The rain that we catch will be used to water our flower and vegetable garden by attaching a sprinkler hose and routing the rainwater to the needed places. In our area of the U.S. we endure drought conditions and water is needed for use other than gardens, etc. Our Rain Barrel will be our source of extra water for such.

Received four of these barrels, however, one barrel was a different model, arg! Still waiting to hear back from customer service on how to get the correct barrel. If you look at all the various pictures of this rain barrel, you will see the top screen held down by four to eight screws. I received one with eight screws, the others with four screws. I redistributed the screws holding down the screen from the primary barrel since I used a 4" round downspout connector. As you can see in pictures on this website with just four screws, the screen is puckered up and not laying flat like in pictures with eight screws. It looks like a large opening covered by screen, but it's only a 4 inch circle hole, centered near the back edge, the rest of the screen is just overlap, see pictures of my setup. The overflow hole screen picture shows four screws, mine only had two screws causing the ends to pucker out and look shabby. The top screen does not have uniform holes, it looks like half the punch was dull and did not fully perforate the material, and they are too small. The inside diameter of the overflow connectors are too small and should be larger in diameter to match the flow of downspout, like 3/4 or 1 inch inside diameter. To connect multiple barrels, you will need 3/4 inch inside diameter hose, I got some at Home Depot. Remember to stair step your barrels so the overflow will work better. That way the water will cascade down from higher elevated barrel to lower barrel. If you connect multiple barrels, they won't sit flush against your wall because the connector hoses, even cut to the shortest length, stick out from behind the barrel, so need an inch or so, offset from the wall. I'm glad I bought these on sale. They do look nice and the threads for the spigot are deep enough so they don't strip when screwing in metal on plastic threads.

Comments about Good Ideas 50 Gallon Rain Wizard Flat Back Rain Barrel:

Just received our rain barrel, and it certainly looks like good value for the money. All I've done so far is to put the small pieces (spout, etc.) into the barrel, but I'm looking forward to hooking it up to a downspout.

It looks very nice and was easy to put up the only draw back was we did not get the bottom pictured to set it on so we had to make out own for it.
We have not had a chance to test it out yet so we will see how it fills when it rains.

Works Perfectly! I drilled a hole in the side to work with my Rain Reserve gutter filter. The brass fitting is nice compared to the cheap plastic you get with other barrels.

            Customer Q & A

            8 Questions About This Product
Q: "Is the barrel BPA free?"
A: Yes, this rain barrel is BPA free.
Q: "Is this product resistant to cracking from the freezing-and-thawing of extreme Midwest temps?"
A: It is resistant to very low temperatures, however we do recommend that you take the following steps to ensure the longevity of your rain barrel. "Empty or drain your rain barrel, remove spigot, run-off hose, and drain plug before storing for the winter. When possible store your barrel in a protected/indoor area but if the rain barrel must remain outside turn it upside down and secure it to prevent animal intrusion or water accumulation which can freeze, expand, and potentially crack the barrel wall."
            Q: "What about overflow?"
A: There is a shut-off valve for hose hook-up or dual overflow.
Q: "Does that top section lift off?"
A: The top section does not lift off.
Q: "Does this include the screen?"
A: Yes, the screen is included.
Q: "Can a hose attach to the overflow to divert the water further away from the foundation?
A: The hose can be attached to the spigot.
Q: "Can these be painted to match the house?"
A: Yes, it may be painted but please be sure to use a paint intended for plastic surfaces.
Q: "Where is this product produced? Is it made in the USA or is it an import?
A: No, this product is completely manufactured in Lake City, Pennsylvania.
