About Shorea Wood
Shorea is possibly the best wood choice for outdoor furniture. Related to Burma teak, this hardwood grows naturally and plentifully in the Pacific Rim countries, making it considerably less expensive than teak. Because shorea is dense, heavy, and hard, and contains an abundance of natural oils, it is highly resistant to rot, bug infestation, weather, and marring.
Shorea is strong and weather-resistant enough to be left untreated. If left untreated, each piece will weather to a nice shade of gray. The weathering process will change the color, but the grain will still be smooth. You may treat each piece with linseed oil to prolong weathering. Each piece is durable, classic, and elegant.
About Shorea Wood and Linseed Oil
Shorea is possibly the best wood choice for outdoor furniture. Related to Burma teak, this hardwood grows naturally and plentifully in the Pacific Rim countries. Because shorea is dense, heavy, and hard, and contains an abundance of natural oils, it is highly resistant to rot, bug infestation, weather, and marring. Shorea (red lauan) wood will have variations is color - from a red to a yellow cast.
The Shorea wood for this item is treated with linseed oil. Linseed oil is not a varnish. The oil soaks into the pores of the wood leaving a shiny (not glossy) surface that shows off the grain of the wood. Linseed oil helps protects the wood from denting by compression and from accelerated deterioration.
After assembly simply wipe the bench with a damp cloth to remove any excess oil that may be remaining. Please note that it is recommended to let your bench sit outside for 2-3 days before sitting on it to let the stain air out and completely dry.

Everything went very well with this purchase-price was good, shipping was perfect, and no damages upon arrival. I don't like assembling furniture, but this was easy. Chair took about 15 minutes, table 5, Ottoman 2! All the hardware was there, the holes all matched up and now we have a great chair set. Staining looked good and was fairly even. I will probably touch up with Linseed Oil as they recommend to keep the deep, red look longer. Very happy with this purchase and will do it again!

VERY good value..well constructed. Stain is uneven, but not to the point of making it truly noticable especially for outdoor furniture. After a summer outside in hot sunny N. CA 100+ degrees, I applied a coat of marine teak oil (easy to do - one pint ($16) did two chairs, 2 ottomans and 2 side tables) and they look even better than new ... overall a very good product, very comfortable, and with a afternoon of applying teak oil I think these will last for years.

Overall very good value. We looked at much more expensive chairs that were not as well made and/or comfortable. These are well constructed and EXTREMELY comfortable. The only complaint is that the stain is somewhat uneven but not enough to really detract from the appearance. Additionally, the stain had not completely dried (or it was applied too heavy)when the chair was removed from the packaging. After a week in the sun they were fine.

I love sitting in my new chairs reading a good book with my coffee in the mornings. In the evenings we relax with our wine and watch the sunset.
They are so comfortable.
The stain is not uniform so I'm a little dissatisfied, but it's nothing I can't easily fix myself.
