Description
Who can argue with the classics when they're classics like the Richmond Platform Bed? This bed's designed to be timeless with a simple arched and slatted headboard that can be dressed up in a master suite with sleek striped bedding and solid pillows or made kid-friendly with printed sheets and plush toys. And thanks to environmentally sustainable wood and a super-durable construction, you can feel good about settling in for a long night's sleep at any age.
This traditional bed is crafted with mortise-and-tenon joinery and durable, eco-friendly rubberwood sustainably harvested at the end of its latex-producing life cycle. Side rails are constructed of MDF or plywood, and the entire bed is finished with a high-build, five-step finishing process - including two color coats and multiple sealers - to ensure an even, lasting finish. Two finishes are available: Choose deep brown antique walnut or honey-colored caramel latte.
The bed's softly arched headboard boasts open slats and curved crown molding, offset by an optional solid panel-design footboard. Two or four drawer option for under bed storage on a single side or both sides. Panel-front storage drawers finished in coordinating shades slip easily underneath the bed to catch clothing, extra blankets, toys, and games. Panel footboard is included when you order drawers; bed only options come with open foot rail.
Twin, full, and queen sizes available. Choose the bed and two drawers, the bed and four drawers, or the bed only.

About Atlantic Furniture
Founded in 1983 as Watercraft, Inc., Atlantic Furniture started as a manufacturer of pine waterbed frames. Since then, the Springfield, Mass.-based company has expanded to Fontana, Calif. The company has moved away from the use of pine and now specializes in imported furniture made of the wood of rubber trees.
The Benefits of Eco-Friendly Rubberwood
Prized as an environmentally friendly wood, rubberwood makes use of trees that have been cut down at the end of their latex-producing life cycle. The trees are removed by hand and replaced with new seedlings. In the past, felled rubber trees were either burned on the spot or used as fuel for locomotive engines, brick firing, or latex curing. Now the wood is used in the manufacture of high-end furniture. It is valued for its dense grain, stability, attractive color, and acceptance of different finishes.
Atlantic's Unique Five-Step Finishing Process
Each product in the entire line is finished with a high-build, five-step finishing process. After a thorough sanding, a wipe-on sealer is applied, followed by a tinted sealer to even the grain and color of the wood. Additional sanding prepares the surface for the first base color coat, more sanding, and a second base color coat. After a final sanding, the finish coat is applied. This process produces a beautiful and durable finish that will last for years.

Comments about Richmond Platform Bed:
The packaging is flimsy so check for structural damage to the frame if the boxes are ripped, crushed or otherwise damaged. I did not receive the correct amount of bolts. Two weeks after delivery and two calls to customer service later, I still haven't received the needed hardware. Thanks to my local hardware store, I finally have an assembled frame. Once the hardware issue was resolved, I feel the quality of the bed is appropriate for the price. Assembly is straight-forward. The color is great. I haven't purchased a mattress, yet, so can't comment on comfort or durability. My ranking reflects my frustration with the missing hardware.
Pros
- Comfortable
- Easy To Assemble
- Good Support
Cons
- Can't be disassembled
- Hard to change bedding
- Hard to Make Bed
- Impractical
- Poorly designed
- Sharp corners and edges

Comments about Richmond Platform Bed:
This review is intended primarily for the manufacturer: it is a very poorly designed bed, from a practical standpoint, in my opinion.
This bed is nice-looking and easy to assemble (though you may get an incomplete kit and have to order another one; Hayneedle, though, was quite obliging and sent another kit within a few days time).
However, once you get it assembled it can't be taken apart for moving, for ecample. It is almost impossible to clean under; it will not accommodate a bed skirt to keep lint from the bedclothes from gathering under the bed. It's corners and edges are sharp, which you should bear in mind when making the bed and changing the bedclothes. And the design, where the mattress sets well within the framework, makes it very hard to lift a mattress in order to make the bed.
I expected a lip of no more than, say, a half inch within which to set the mattress. However, with this bed the mattress sets within the frame, and the sides of the frame extend several inches upwards from the level of the slat structure. The mattress sets within this, so it is hard to tuck sheets and blankets under it when making up the bed and changing the bedclothes.
You may want to consider putting a piece of plywood on top of the slat structure, if you have a foam rubber mattress, for better support.
The design of the slat support structure under the bed is such that the central cross piece extends *below* the bed frame on either side and is visible when one stands away from the bed once it is assembled. This is unsightly, so I wouldn't recommend this bed for a guest room, say, or in any situation where the looks of the bed itself matter.
Nor would I recommend it to anyone who moves around a lot, such as someone in the armed forces, for the bed cannot be disassembled for moving, as mentioned above.
I understand that the design of this bed was, at least partly, necessitated by having to ship it in pieces. Nevertheless, a slat structure under a mattress, no matter the bracing structure designed for the slats, cannot be considered a *platform*. So in my opinion, this bed is improperly labeled as a platform bed.
One can't tell from the Hayneedle website that one will encounter any of these problems, as they only reveal themselves once you start using the bed and putting bedclothes on it, and so forth. Thus, from a housewife's standpoint, this is a poorly designed bed.
