I LOVE this composter. [...] It set up in about 1-2 minutes. It is obviously sturdy and well-made; this product is NOT some cheap crapola. I have arthritis in both thumbs, but once I put all my yard compost heap in, my forearm muscle only had to work just a little bit to roll it, it is NOT hard to turn, for ME, and I need the forearm muscle working to keep me agile for raking! The bin handles are close enough together, it is easy to turn even for my stumpy arms. I put in my things, a shot of water and give it two or three turns. No big deal at all! I added things everyday since it arrived.I love the heavy black plastic construction; it keeps the compost warm and moist, absorbing the little sun we get this time of year in Southwestern Arizona. Stays hot, moist and smells like DIRT!I put it next to the garden, but it is very simple to roll off the base and roll it to wherever it needs to go for me to dig out and distribute the compost/rich soil product. That is a plus for me, as I have many places on my 3+ acres that could use a nice amended and nitrogen-rich soil, (with the clay and sand base pervasive in this part of our fair state). The lid is very easy to twirl twice to remove, with the protrusioned handles. The opening is big enough to dump a plastic bag of veggie and fruit tops and skins easily. I put all my vegetable/fruit kitchen waste, coffee grounds, teabags and some brown things too, from the yard, but no weeds with a seed head or diseased plants, of course. I add a little soil from my planting soil bags and a small shot of clean water and twirl it up. I am a big fan of this composter. I am considering getting another one to keep well-amended soil ready for planting in one, and adding new things to the other for the next few weeks of winter-garden topsoil needs. I would recommend this product for anyone, but especially right now for Arizona and Zone 9 -11 winter gardeners like me; now is the time I have lettuce and greens and honestly, there is no store-bought lettuce or greens to rival my home-grown for taste and convenience. I was not compensated in any way for this review; I was looking for a composter and found this one online for a great price! My idea of good customer service is this: I order a quality product and it arrives quickly with NO hassle and IS a quality product. That is my experience with this composter and this company!Thank You!

Upon opening the box there were hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny shards of plastic both inside the box and inside the tumbler itself. Also inside the tumbler were a bunch of loose pieces of metal that looked like rivets, but it didn't appear that the rivets attaching the lid opening to the unit were broken. One of the areas around one of the rivets looked like the plastic was melted badly though. I found out later after turning the 1/2 full tumbler only a few times that compost was coming out in an opening caused on the edge of the sealed lid. See photos!

I know it's not rocket science, but it would have been nice if there some kind of documentation with the tumbler with recommendations on how to compost with it versus a regular compost bin.

Comments about Good Ideas 52 Gallon Compost Wizard Jr. Recycled Plastic Compost Tumbler - Black:

After looking for many months for a composter we liked we finally came across this one. We wanted something that wasn't too big. We were also looking for something somewhat stylish. This this is great. It came fully assembled. Simply took it out of the box and we were rolling. After using it for a good month we are noticing that the material breaks down very nicely.
Only reason for not giving 5 stars is that it can get a little difficult to spin. Not a huge deal at all. We love it. Already recommended to a family member who plans on purchasing the exact one we went with.

Comments about Good Ideas 52 Gallon Compost Wizard Jr. Recycled Plastic Compost Tumbler - Black:

I just moved to a free-standing condo from the country where I composted just about everything and when I got here I realized that composting was an important part of day-to-day "stuff". I did not want to pay $15/month for curbside service, so I went out on the web to see what my choices were. This Wizard Jr was a popular item among various sites and when I got the dimensions and checked them against the space I had for it - I was sold. The product came from Hayneedle sooner than expected and I couldn't be happier to resume my composting ways...this product is as described and I can't wait to see the results of this very simple, important and beneficial process!

I had wanted one for years. This fit the bill to perfection -so easy to use and looks great where it is in the back garden. Fed Ex , however, are a disaster-left pkg in the poring rain without even ringing my door bell, or putting it under the eaves-he does this all the time-when I went to look for it the cardboard box had disintegrated and was laying soggy at the bottom of the article!

My husband ordered this for me. He got tired of me throwing my banana peels and other veggie waste in the backyard. He was afraid we would attract critters. He shopped around a lot to all of our local stores and went online to do research. We loved the free shipping for this big/bulky item. The delivery was quick. There was no assembly required and we are ready to go!!

Comments about Good Ideas 52 Gallon Compost Wizard Jr. Recycled Plastic Compost Tumbler - Black:

I have been composting for years, but when I moved to the Desert Southwest, I constantly had problems keeping my compost moist enough. This composter solves that problem, and is just the right size for a small household's kitchen scraps and yard waste. Some previous users complained about water collecting in the stand, but I don't see that to be a major problem (of course, we don't get as much rain here as some might). I find it easy enough to rotate, although I do need to use a bit of muscle power. (I'm 61, however, but it's still do-able.)

I like to keep a can full of "browns" next to my composter (see photo) so that I can easily add a couple handfuls of leaves, etc., whenever I put in my household scraps, "greens."

I just ordered a second composter so that I can let one rest (and finish composting) while I use the other for fresh materials. I'm so happy that I can clean up my old "open" compost piles and use something that really works!

This could be a five star but I'm waiting to see the final compost product. The set up was so easy, took five minutes. I went to this system after a very labor intensive pair of worm bins dug into the ground with plastic lattice bins below the surface. Made great compost but it was hard to get to it. Then rats dug down underneath and chewed through the lattice! This composter looks and feels indestructible, and offers easy access ... for me not for rodents. Exactly what I was looking for.

                    Customer Q & A

                    6 Questions About This Product
Q: "I live in southern california where houses are close togethor. How odorous is composting?"
                    A:

It depends on the type of materials you are composting. I mainly compost greens and browns, avoiding meat and my compost smells very earthy. I have had no complaints from neighbors!

Q: "Does make compost "tea" accessible?"
A: This composter does not but check out our exclusive compost tumbler that does make compost tea, GID028.
Q: "Where is this product produced? Is it made in the USA or is it an import?"
A: No, this product is completely manufactured in Lake City, Pennsylvania.
                    Q: "Is this BPA free?"
A: Yes, none of the products sold by Good Ideas contain BPA.
Q: "What is the size of the lid?"
                    A:

The opening is 12 inches, and the lid itself is about 14 inches.

Q: "The instructions say nothing about using soil in the composter. I always thought that was essential. Yes or no and how much?"
A: A low-maintenance pile has a combination of brown and green plant matter, plus some moisture to keep the good bacterial humming. Shredded newspaper, wood chips and dry leaves are ideal for the brown elements; kitchen waste and grass clippings are perfect for the green add-ins. Soil is not an essential ingredient.
