I LOVE this composter. [...] It set up in about 1-2 minutes. It is obviously sturdy and well-made; this product is NOT some cheap crapola. I have arthritis in both thumbs, but once I put all my yard compost heap in, my forearm muscle only had to work just a little bit to roll it, it is NOT hard to turn, for ME, and I need the forearm muscle working to keep me agile for raking! The bin handles are close enough together, it is easy to turn even for my stumpy arms. I put in my things, a shot of water and give it two or three turns. No big deal at all! I added things everyday since it arrived.I love the heavy black plastic construction; it keeps the compost warm and moist, absorbing the little sun we get this time of year in Southwestern Arizona. Stays hot, moist and smells like DIRT!I put it next to the garden, but it is very simple to roll off the base and roll it to wherever it needs to go for me to dig out and distribute the compost/rich soil product. That is a plus for me, as I have many places on my 3+ acres that could use a nice amended and nitrogen-rich soil, (with the clay and sand base pervasive in this part of our fair state). The lid is very easy to twirl twice to remove, with the protrusioned handles. The opening is big enough to dump a plastic bag of veggie and fruit tops and skins easily. I put all my vegetable/fruit kitchen waste, coffee grounds, teabags and some brown things too, from the yard, but no weeds with a seed head or diseased plants, of course. I add a little soil from my planting soil bags and a small shot of clean water and twirl it up. I am a big fan of this composter. I am considering getting another one to keep well-amended soil ready for planting in one, and adding new things to the other for the next few weeks of winter-garden topsoil needs. I would recommend this product for anyone, but especially right now for Arizona and Zone 9 -11 winter gardeners like me; now is the time I have lettuce and greens and honestly, there is no store-bought lettuce or greens to rival my home-grown for taste and convenience. I was not compensated in any way for this review; I was looking for a composter and found this one online for a great price! My idea of good customer service is this: I order a quality product and it arrives quickly with NO hassle and IS a quality product. That is my experience with this composter and this company!Thank You!

Upon opening the box there were hundreds, if not thousands, of tiny shards of plastic both inside the box and inside the tumbler itself. Also inside the tumbler were a bunch of loose pieces of metal that looked like rivets, but it didn't appear that the rivets attaching the lid opening to the unit were broken. One of the areas around one of the rivets looked like the plastic was melted badly though. I found out later after turning the 1/2 full tumbler only a few times that compost was coming out in an opening caused on the edge of the sealed lid. See photos!

I know it's not rocket science, but it would have been nice if there some kind of documentation with the tumbler with recommendations on how to compost with it versus a regular compost bin.

It has just arrived so it hasn't had enough time to do it's job, but it is very easy to move around, very stable, rolls nicely on it's detachable base and is visually low impact.

Comments about Good Ideas 52 Gallon Compost Wizard Jr. Recycled Plastic Compost Tumbler - Black:

I have had 2 other composters and both failed after a year or so of use due to rivets or screws breaking through the plastic. This one caught my eye because it has no screws or rivets. I've only had it for a few days but it looks promising!

Comments about Good Ideas 52 Gallon Compost Wizard Jr. Recycled Plastic Compost Tumbler - Black:

Guess what I had delivered yesterday. I'll give you some clues. It's black, looks like a large cylinder resting on its own cradle. Further clues...it has a large circular lid, that when twisted and removed out of its position, will reveal a spacious cavern. On peering into the cavern's depths you'll note there's plenty of room to hold and produce a large amount of the best organic product that you won't buy in any store. And...you have the satisfaction that you created the finished product yourself. It's fun to throw your vegetable scraps, newspapers, grass clippings and many other substances into the cavity, but you must follow the manual's advice and put in only the substances that will metamorphose into rich, organic loam. Can you hear your plants in the garden, or even to the ones in the smallest containers, whispering, "Please sprinkle some around me." I love my compost maker.

I purchased my first Good Ideas 52 Gallon Compost Wizard Jr. a couple of months ago. I really liked it but i was running out of room. With Fall coming on I decided to get a second composter to fill with leaves while the first one finishes "cooking". This composter is pretty tough. It rotates well even when nearly full (takes more effort though) and has survived rodent attempts to gnaw into the compost.

Product arrived in a large cardboard box, and in prefect shape. It is a little hard to roll even on wheels once you get a fair amount of compost inside. Overall we love the compost tumbler, and are looking forward to enjoying the fruits of composting.

Just received my Composter Junior. Fully assembled, amazingly simple, and very sturdy. The shopping time was extremely fast (about 3 days). Already filled it with grass clippings, and looking for more... Looking forward to wonderful black gold for the spring planting season.

Would definitely recommend for the small to moderate gardener.

                  Customer Q & A

                  13 Questions About This Product
Q: "How long does it take to make compost?"
A: While not all of our composters compost at the same rate, this composter will compost in approximately 2-3 weeks.
Q: "Can i compost egg shells?"
A: Yes you can compost egg shells.
Q: "I live in southern california where houses are close togethor. How odorous is composting?"
A: It depends on the type of materials you are composting. I mainly compost greens and browns, avoiding meat and my compost smells very earthy. I have had no complaints from neighbors!
Q: "Will the critters be able to get in?"
A: Should be pretty critter proof, but it really depends on what you compost. If you compost a lot of meats that will attract critters.
Q: "Are there rain vents so moisture can get in, or do you have to add it manually?"
A: Moisture would have to be added manually.
Q: "Does make compost "tea" accessible?"
A: This composter does not but check out our exclusive compost tumbler that does make compost tea, GID028.
Q: "Can this be rotated on the ground, do you kneel down to turn it or do you need to put it on a stand?"
A: This model comes with a base that have rollers
Q: "Where is this product produced? Is it made in the USA or is it an import?"
A: No, this product is completely manufactured in Lake City, Pennsylvania.
                  Q: "Is this BPA free?"
A: Yes, none of the products sold by Good Ideas contain BPA.
Q: "What is the size of the lid?"
                  A:

The opening is 12 inches, and the lid itself is about 14 inches.

Q: "Does the composter achieve thermophilic temperatures for at least 3 days straight?"
A: For best results, you will want to place this composter in the sun so that the interior temperature is between 120-150 degrees farenheit.
Q: "The instructions say nothing about using soil in the composter. I always thought that was essential. Yes or no and how much?"
A: A low-maintenance pile has a combination of brown and green plant matter, plus some moisture to keep the good bacterial humming. Shredded newspaper, wood chips and dry leaves are ideal for the brown elements; kitchen waste and grass clippings are perfect for the green add-ins. Soil is not an essential ingredient.
Q: "Can you use magazines instead of newpapers?"
A: Magazines should not be composted because they use glossy paper.
