Comments about Sky Watcher Sky-Watcher 10 Inch Dobsonian Telescope:

Overall a nice, easy to use, capable telescope that is good for beginners. I use it with my 8 year old son, and there are no worries about it being too complex or delicate for him to use. We observe in the front yard, and set up/collimation takes about 15 minutes tops. The collapsible truss system is well designed, as is the entire OTA, including the primary mirror adjusting screws. I think the optics are good, but the jury is still out as skies have not cooperated since I bought a "good" lens. The focuser has only coarse adjustment and I wish it also had a fine adjuster like some other scopes in this class. It is not gear driven, but some sort of friction roller - not sure how that will hold up over time. Sometimes I spend more time making sure it is in optimum focus than I would like. The mount is made of particle board, again like others in this class. It works well overall, but altitudinal and azimuthal motion is not as smooth as the advertising suggests. On my unit, one of the three (small!) teflon pads on which the base plate rides fell off out of the box. They are only stapled into the particle board, which is CHEAP. The clutch system of the altitudinal adjuster also can be tricky to operate - hard to get it just right, not too tight, not too lose. It usually takes some effort to get your target centered in the eyepiece. Plastic bushings line the particle board holes of the altitudinal adjusters, and one of mine has fallen out and is lost already (2 weeks). Finally, one of the large screws supplied to assemble the Dobsonian mount was defective out of the box (bent, messed up threads), which seems par for the course in our globalized, made in [*]economy. I can put another screw in easily enough. So, after 2 weeks of ownership I am happy with the performance and think this scope will serve our family well for years to come. I think the primary mirror/OTA is very good quality, which is the most important thing. The mount works OK, but I'd encourage the manufacturers to continue to improve upon it. I can live with the minor deficiencies listed here and am happy overall with our purchase.

Comments about Sky Watcher Sky-Watcher 10 Inch Dobsonian Telescope:

As other reviews have noted, this is a very convenient scope to use due to the collapsing truss design. I can have the scope set up in just a couple of minutes. It is easy to collimate with a laser collimator and I recommend you purchase one. It has an excellent finderscope and a decent focuser. I do not like the 2" adapter set up however, and found it inconvenient to use The mirror seems to produce excellent bright images and I am quite happy with the optics. I do not believe you need a shroud for this scope. It does not have a cooling fan and I made one using a simple computer fan with a 9 volt battery and taped in onto the back of the mirror cell. However, I have not found that this scope takes very long to cool down even if the fan is not used. The mechanics are a bit rougher. Using the hand clutch produces a lot of popping noise since you are compressing the base into the altitude bearings. It is really quite annoying, especially during star parties. I also found the altitude movements quite stiff. I have tried a number of fixes and so far putting a bit of graphite on the plastic bearings seems to work. I have also heard of other people who put a bit of Vaseline on them with good results. 2" eyepieces pretty much require a counterweight. I picked up a welding magnet for a few dollars at [...] which does the job.

Comments about Sky Watcher Sky-Watcher 10 Inch Dobsonian Telescope:

A very good telescope that finds a neutral ground between a full sonotube dob and a truss dob by eliminating the annoying bits of both. The collapsible truss rods are pretty ingenious - you'll be able to move it in one piece by yourself and have the whole thing set up in under a minute.
Optics are good . . . probably great, but I don't know enough to act like I can make a good call here. Stars are precise points, no blue glow around planets and brighter objects, good deep sky contrast, so I'm guessing pretty good.
Construction quality is pretty great, too. The OTA, viewfinder, and focuser are all metal and feel substantial and durable. The alt/az base is pretty standard stuff - particleboard with Teflon bearings. One really cool feature is the hand-controlled "clutch" system that can be used to compensate for large eyepieces or tons of kit on the secondary mirror cell. Many dobs require weights to compensate, but this one does it at the twist of a handle.

Only con I can think of is that I wish it came with a mirror cell fan - the cell supports are tapped to hold an 80mm fan and the mirror is large enough that cool-down time is an issue.
And, this is a non-issue but raised an eyebrow - the focuser requires an adapter for both 1.25" and 2" eyepieces. Uhhhh . . .
