Most of Prepac's RTA products are made from a combination of "engineered woods." Engineered Wood is a mixture of high quality hard and soft wood materials, which generally come from the surplus of original lumber processing. These materials are bonded together with a synthetic resin, in a process under high heat and pressure to make a very stable, environmentally friendly product. The result is dense, strong panels, which are then laminated with durable, attractive finishes.

The assembly isntructions failed to show how to install the plastic dowels and when they were put in and the top put on they came right through the laminate essentially ruining the whole bench.

Directions are vague as to which side out/up but not too difficult; quick assembly; however, the plastic dowels require a hammer and went right through the other end of the top of the board. Hayneedle contacted the manuf and is sending me a replacement top! Otherwise, great value as long as you recognize what you're getting: pressed, laminated wood -- not solid but worth it for my purposes.

The instructions were not intuitive but if you take your time, you can figure it out. We didn't bother with the cardboard backing, perhaps the only component that was sub-par. They (we bought 2) look great tucked in under our long front window.

I ordered this for a Christmas present for my parents. while the design fit perfectly in the their entry way, we were disappointed to learn it was made of laminate material. For the money, i was expecting REAL wood. i was embarrassed to give it to my parents. I believe they would want higher quality in their home's entrance.
