I had a similar one that I purchase about 25 years ago. The round tube that fit into the base was made of plastic & I broke it.
The part on this new lamp is made of metal. I like this better.
To keep the lamp in the position you want you can tighted the nuts or nut on the side at the joints with your fingers.
