Customer Q & A

1 Question About This Product
Q: "How do you care for this wood? Does it require oil periodically to keep it from drying out if it is in sun. Can it be stained, or is that a mistake?"
A: Good Grade A Teak Wood as used in our Hyde Park Bench requires NO Maintenance. It is a dense wood and oil does not penetrate beyond the first 0.03 or 0.04 inch (a very small layer). If exposed to sunlight Teak will BLEACH to a silvery color like driftwood on the beach. You can prevent this UV Bleaching by using Teak Oil or any other UV protector. Oil Based Teak Oil can be purchased at Home Depot or Lowes (Watco Teak Oil, Valspar Marine Teak Oil). Water Based Teak Oil like Cabot Australian Hardwood Oil (NATURAL) can be purchased at paint shops and at Ace Hardware. We recommend water based teak oil emulsion only because one has to be careful with rags and brushes used to apply teak oil and dispose them quickly with water (for danger of spontaneous combustion of vapors). If teak oil of any kind is used one will have to periodically re apply the oil since it does evaporate over time (depends on heat and sun exposure – but usually once a year). If the product does bleach, the original color can be revived by sanding or using “wood brightener” products (again available at big box stores). The “wood brightener” products have some chemicals which will peel off the outer layer of the wood (similar to sanding). Teak can be stained or painted – but that detracts from the natural beauty of teak wood.
