Care

Wood sandboxes with a clear or stained finish should be re-treated every year or two to retain their smooth, protected exterior. We recommend a water-based finish, which is less toxic than an oil-based finish. Re-treating your wood sandbox will keep it smooth and conditioned. You can find wood finishes and sealers at your local hardware store.

I ordered this model because of the canopy/cover-what a great idea! We live in San Diego and get more than our share of blindingly sunny days so I wanted my daughter to have some protection without having the hassle of a separate cover. When it arrived in it's long narrow package I was a little nervous--I'm not terribly handy and the thought of putting this together was scary. Luckily I had my mom's help and even then it took us FOREVER to do. The directions are hilariously vauge and it wasn't until my dad, a carpenter, came over that we made any real progress. We found playsand [...] and filled the box with about 300lbs which seems a nice amount. My daughter is 19 months old and I think she and one or two friends can fit in there nicely. I don't think she'll be able to use it past three years old, it's just not big enough. All in all it's a great product, the parts are sturdy and well-made. If only it was easier to put together....

Instructions are poor. Must be mechanically inclined to assemble. Basic box is good quality. Screws are a little short in length. Roof supports were poor quality wood, cross beam was a little short and holes were drilled off center. Replacing these and doing the work yourself is inexpensive. The cranking roof concept is a good one. The sandbox is a good buy ONLY if you can get it at discount. And the box will be easy to move or replace parts when they weather. We could build this better and less expensive in the U.S.

Not sure how durable the cover will be. Only time will tell. But it is not water proof. Will require a tarp cover this winter.

Comments about Tierra-Derco Large Covered Wooden Sandbox:

This shipped faster than expected. The quality is terrific, the wood is sanded well and seems to have a finish on it already. The size is deceiving, but nonetheless perfect for my 1 year old. It was super, super easy to put together and the top comes up and down very easily. I love this and look forward to years of enjoyment!

This is one of the few sandboxes with attached covers making it great for us. It is large enough for 2-3 children to dig and play. The directions were vague in places and required some extra time in putting it together.

Comments about Tierra-Derco Large Covered Wooden Sandbox:

Bought this for my daughter's first birthday because she loves the sand. I don't think that this was really that hard to assemble but the instructions were a nightmare. It probably took about an hour and a half with my husband and I working together. When it was completed though it is very nice looking and seemingly sturdy. I can't wait for my daughter to get out there and play in it!

Comments about Tierra-Derco Large Covered Wooden Sandbox:

In terms of attractiveness, materials, etc. this was a top choice. The problem is the whole awning system is difficult to operate by just one adult and is not at all durable. We have had to replace the cable 2x in 3 years and it still doesn't work well. Also the wood frame of the awning has broken.

        Customer Q & A

        5 Questions About This Product
        Q: "Does the Tierra-Derco TG231 have a bottom?"
A: Bottoms are typically not included with sandboxes as they can trap rain and water.  We recommend using landscape fabric as a bottom liner.  Landscape fabric allows water to drain as well as keeps grass and weeds from growing up through the sand.  Landscape fabric can be found at all major hardware stores and garden centers.
Q: " Does this sandbox have a bottom?"
A: This sandbox does not have a bottom.
Q: "What would you recommend be used as a bottom since this box is perimeter frame only?"
A: You will want to allow for drainage so I would suggest the material used for garden/flower beds.
Q: "Is the roof pretty stable?"
A: The roof is stable but if a child tries to hang from the roof it could cause injury.  The roof will need to be cranked to lower.
Q: "Is the Tierra-Derco TG231 cover have wood underneath the vinyl or is the cover strictly vinyl?"
A: The cover is vinyl with wood supports.
