Comments about Vixen VMC110L Modified Cassegrain Telescope with Porta II Mount:

The entire set came well packaged with the optical tube and tripod in separate boxes. The optical tube and tripod are well constructed and seem to be of good quality. The exterior accessories are lesser quality. The slow motion knobs are flimsy and very loose on the worm shafts even when tightened all the way. The red dot view finder also seems a bit loose and wobbly even when fully assembled and tightened down. The instructions are minimal at best but this system is simple enough it wasn't too hard to figure everything out. In a nutshell, the mechanics are good, the movements are nice and smooth, and operation is easy. The exterior accessories are kind of cheap but you cannot expect any more with a telescope in this price range. The manufacturer put the money where it counts -- into the optical tube, the mount, and the tripod. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase.

this is fine scope i bought a barlow and extra power, watch out for misty nights it makes the moon and stars not focus. need a clear night, and you will get crisp views.

Comments about Vixen VMC110L Modified Cassegrain Telescope with Porta II Mount:

I needed a grab-and-go scope. I have a Zhumell 8-inch Dobsonian (which is great by the way) but I can't take it on planes and I can't fit it in my car with all my family's luggage.

So I bought the Vixen VMC110L in hopes that I could still get some good viewing in while on the road. My hopes came true.

This is a great scope. The quality of the Vixen is apparent immediately when you open the box. Much of the scope is metal and the tripod is all metal, no plastic. The whole package feels very robust and sturdy. Nothing about the package is flimsy.

The directions for setting up the scope are good, but honestly, it's so simple you really don't even need the directions. Everything about setting up the scope is straight forward, and fast. I found the directions online for collimating the scope, but upon checking the collimation after it was delivered, I found it was perfect. No need to collimate.

This scope is my first scope with a red-dot finder and I really like it. It's all metal and seems to be of high quality. Once you get it lined up with your scope, you can find things very quickly. I was finding Messier and NGC objects very quickly, even in a light-polluted city.

The Vixen eyepiece that comes with the scope is very good. I've even considered buying more Vixen eyepieces after using the one that came with the scope. It pulls in a good bit of light.

The scope itself pulls in a lot of light as well. It's about half the size of my Dob, but you can still clearly see Messier and NGC objects no problem, even with some light pollution. At higher magnifications (anything under a 12mm eyepiece) things start to get a little fuzzy. Therefore, I wouldn't recommend using any high powered eyepieces, but anything 12mm and above gives great views.

The tripod is a Alt-Azimuth tripod and it's so easy to use that I would recommend it to beginners and pros alike, if you have no plans of doing long-exposure astrophotography. The slow motion controls work well, with the exception that horizontal one comes unscrewed sometimes and you have to retighten it several times during viewing. This is a minor complaint however, as the tripod is the sturdiest I have used and really improves your viewing experience in comparison with cheaper tripods. You get what you pay for.

The only real complaint I have is the objective lens cap. It seems they made it too small and after a wonderful night of viewing, it's a bit difficult to put back on, especially if it's cold outside. But if this is the worst of the scope's problems, then you can tell it's a scope worth considering for your travels.

I highly recommend this telescope for it's ease of use, portability, strong and sturdy construction, and quality optics.
