I hadn't bought binoculars for about 30 years, so anything was going to be an improvement. I decided to treat myself to a new ones, since all I want to do these days is birdwatch. Uncharacteristically, I did not buy the first pair that popped up on Google; I researched with care and found that the Zeiss Terra 8X42 fit all my criteria: smaller than most, a magnification suitable for my purposes and most of all quick and easy focusing. The Zeiss Terra were everything the manufacturer and the reviews claimed they were and more! My complaint is only with the directions. I needed binoculars to read them! They poorly described how to attach the strap and the drawings were no help either, but I finally prevailed. A minor complaint, however. I love my new binoculars!

I purchased this Terra sight unseen to upgrade from Bushnell Excursion EX 8x36. It would be used by my wife or for light birding while the trusted dialyst 10x40 for more extended outings.
The Terra wins over the Excursion hands-down although it is twice the price of the latter. Color rendition: much better than Excursion but does not match the dialyst. Ergonomics: optimal for size and weight ratio with bigger barrel for comfort and heavier weight than Excursion for steadness. Contrast: when viewing a plain white figurine in dim light, it shows less details between bright to dark transition than dialyst. 3-D perception: the Terra flattens to a certain degree while the dialyst offers superb contour of the white figurine. Focus accuracy: both Zeiss focus quick and sharp while the Excursion gives a play to a range of sharpness. Both Excursion and Terra has modern large focussing knob while dialyst has the dated smaller thin knob. Material: Excursion and Terra are similar in material construction although much more solid feel for the Terra. Dialyst is bullet-proof but a bit heavy. Subject eye fatigue: both Zeiss allow the eye to rest focus onto a small subject in a complex field of view while the Excursion gives a "confusing feeling" to the visual field. Field of view: the Excursion offers 426 ft while the Terra offers 375 ft at 1,000 ft, so for beginners, it is a bit more difficult to adapt. Brightness: the Terra is far brighter than the Excursion naturally with the bigger exit puptil but offers a less natural bright feel compare to the dialyst with a smaller exit pupil but far superior optics as expected. Summary: the Terra 8x42 at US$349 and Cn$389 is certainly near the best value for the money is one is not prepared to venture to the world-class level at $2,000 range.

This binocular has an entry level price, but is better quality than most birders will ever need in their lifetime. The biggest difference between the Zeiss Terra ED (~$350) and the Zeiss Victory FL 8x42 ($2000+) is the brightness of the image. If you compare the Zeiss Terra ED 8x42 vs. the Nikon Monarch ATB 8x42 (for years the Nikon Monarch has been considered by many as the best binocular in terms of value}, the Zeiss Terra has some advantages. The Zeiss Terra has an amazing close focus. The Zeiss Terra ED has better eye piece rain guards and better lens caps, both the only thing Monarch users chronically found to complain about. Zeiss includes a soft pouch and now includes the same quality carrying case that come with more expensive Zeiss Conquest binoculars. For this price range Zeiss will give Nikon a serious challenge for market share in a niche formerly dominated by Nikon. In my opinon, there are no better binoculars than the Zeiss Terra ED 8x42 in the under $400 price range. They have my highest recommendation.
