Bought these binoculars for our trip to Alaska via the inside passage. They worked wonderfully and I spent most of my cruise outside on the balcony or the bow of the ship. I felt that I could reach out and touch some of the glaciers. I have been wanting a good pair of zoom binoculars for years and these were better than I expected.

I use these for work on cell phone towers to read colored tape at up to 300ft, not impressed with them at all. Purchased a set of 10x50 and a set of 12x50 actions for my crews and these I purchased for me.

Want my 12x50 actions back. The zoom is almost a grinding feeling, the eye focus changes left to right when you zoom, even after spending 2 min focusing its only 70% at best as clear as the fixed actions. Then the last complaint the field of view is very small. Give an example of my use and problems with them.

287ft up the tower, the colored tape I was trying to read is blue-green-green-violet-red, and yellow-yellow-green-red. The bands are aprox 1 inch wide with 1 inch spacing, took me 3 min to get these 10-22 zooms clear enough to read it, had the colors on the other sectore with the 12x50 actions in less then 45 seconds.

Even though the zoom is much higher, the size of the object is much smaller at the same magnification level, kinda like looking at a picture thats been blown up the picture is bigger but the magnification level is the same its just on larger paper.

For what I use them for in a comparision to the 12x50 actions I rate these a 2 at best.

Comments about Nikon 10-22x50mm Action Zoom XL Binoculars with Tripod Adapter:

I recently purchased the Nikon 10-22x50 mm Action Zoom XL binoculars and was thrilled with the optical performance of these binoculars.

The binoculars as you would expect from Nikon are very well built. Esthetically they are pleasing to the eye and ergonomically well thought out.

Optical performance was excellent. The optics were checked out against high contrast objects and very little chromatic aberration was noted when the magnification was cranked up to 22 x power. As well the focus was maintained from 10x to 22 x power. This is done easily using one's thumb and on the magnification lever.

The lack of chromatic aberration and zoom function are the best features of this set of binoculars. Nebula, galaxies, star clusters, and planets are readily seen with this set of binoculars.

As a bonus, you can use the tripod accessory that comes with the kit to mount the binoculars to steady the optical system for astronomical observation.

Comments about Nikon 10-22x50mm Action Zoom XL Binoculars with Tripod Adapter:

I purchased these with the Nikon 8x24x25 red compact ones. They are great. I compared the two when I got this pair. I intended on keeping them both. This one being for a tripod mostly. But when I compared the images with each other, the red compact pair was clearer and didn't make the objects look unreal at full zoom... On these, on full zoom, things looked like paper objects on top of each other. Looked thru the red ones and they appeared real looking..I compared both at the zoom of 10 to 22 to be fair about it. I just wasn't too happy with these. Sent them back.

Probably the best 10X50 clarity for the money. It may be me but I felt there was a loss of clarity at higher magnifications. I plan to exchange these for some Nikon 10X 50 (Fixed focal length) Trailblazers. Hayneedle customer service was oustanding when Fed Ex lost my order.

            Customer Q & A

            12 Questions About This Product
Q: "Does this item have coated lenses? Is this a good binocular for the price or is there a similar product that might be better, keeping in mind I would like something that zooms to over 15x? This would mostly be used for bird/nature watching. This weighs 2.6 lbs. - is that considered to be on the heavy side? I am not going to sit there and hold a pair of binoculars for a 1/2 hour, but is this weight generally comfortable to hold for a few minutes?"
A: The Nikon Action Zoom binocular is a best seller.  The lenses are multi-coated. The binocular is not meant to be compact by any means. The weight of 2.6 pounds is the price you pay for a large objective lens binocular with full Zoom features. I would say that the weight is not unbearable. I would suggest checking out some of our binocular suspenders if you really want a comfortable fit for long hikes or trips in the field.
Q: "I was looking at a binocular with astronomy and birdwatching capabilities with night vision and zoom capability.  Is there any such binocular with 30X zoom, 12X magnification or more and 50mm lens?"
A: I am sorry but no, there is not a binocular with all those different functions. A Standard 10x50 however would be able to do both birdwatching and astronomy. A zoom could do both as well although zoom binoculars do not have a very good light gathering capability so I wouldn't recommend them for astronomy. As for night vision the binocular would not have enough magnification capabilities for any of the uses but using at night, although not for astronomy.
Q: "Do these binoculars come with a case & strap? Thanks?"
A: Yes these come with a Soft Case, Neck Strap, Tripod Adapter, Objective lens caps, and eyepiece caps.
Q: "I was looking for info on the eye relief and the exit pupil. You are the only site providing this info. So, thank you very much for the professional approach. At the same time I would like to get more info. Why do different manufacturers make different diameter eyepiece lenses (the circle where you actually look). What is the diameter of the eyepiece lens in Nikon 10-22X50 Action Zoom XL?"
A: The main reason that manufacturers make different size eyepieces is mainly dependent on the overall size of the binocular that they are trying to achieve. The overall diameter is approximately 1".
Q: "Does this have any color tinting when looking through the lens?"
A: Not that i have noticed, but it is not a coma corrected or apochromatic lens so there may be a little towards the edges.
            Q: "Are these binoculars fogproof?"
A: I am sorry but no, you will want to look in Nikon's Action Extreme series as they are all waterproof in that series.
Q: "Where is the Nikon Action Zoom made?"
A: The Nikon 10-22x50 Action Zoom XL binoculars are manufactured in China.
Q: "Using the Nikon 10-22x50 Action Zoom XL Binoculars, what would you say would be the smallest object you could see clearly @ a 1000 foot distance?"
A: Nikon 10-22x50 Action Zoom XL binoculars will make objects appear to be 22 times as close as they actually are. That means objects 1,000 feet away will seem to be only 45 feet distant. At that distance, you should see a chipmunk or a squirrel with reasonable clarity.
Q: "I am new to binoculars, but I want to purchase a pair for recreational use.  I live near Lake Michigan and I like to watch the boats. Can you recommend some?"
A: The Nikon 10-22x50 Action Zoom XL is a good, general-purpose zoom binocular in its price range. If you're interested in brighter views and perhaps viewing the moon and planets, you might also enjoy the Zhumell 20x80 SuperGiant binoculars. You'll want to use them with a tripod, but they're great for long-distance viewing and viewing the sky. They're drawing rave reviews from members of the astronomy community.
Q: "I returned a gift of $200 military binoculars that were very long and heavy. I want to buy a pair that are reasonable for birding. I live in South Florida and carry my binoculars in the back seat or trunk of my car. I have some old Tasco 7X35?"
A: Nikon 10-22x50 Action Zoom XL Binoculars are pretty rugged. They should be able to stand being locked in your car without melting.
Q: "I ordered a pair of Nikon 10-22x50 Action Zoom, (still waiting for them to ship), but my question is do you have a different lens cover I can buy for these? I have 1 new pair of Nikon 10X50s and the lens caps are hard to keep up with?"
A: Unfortunately, Nikon doesn't offer any alternatives where lens covers are concerned.
Q: "Is Nikon 10-22x50 Action Zoom XL a good one for sport events like soccer games?"
A: Yes.  These binoculars bring in a lot of light and because of their size and also allow you to adjust your magnification based on where your focus point is.  The zoom feature is perfect for sporting events.
