Description
Development on the A-6 Intruder started in 1957, after the U.S. Navy issued specifications for an all-weather attack aircraft that would replace the A-1 Skyraider. Since being accepted into military service in 1963, the A-6 Intruder has seen combat with U.S. forces in a variety of roles, primarily as an attack aircraft. The Intruder was used as an attack aircraft throughout the entire period of direct American involvement in the Vietnam conflict, with 84 total losses, including 58 to enemy fire.
The A-6 has also seen combat operations in Lebanon (1983), Libya as part of Operation El Dorado Canyon, and Iraq during Operation Desert Storm, as well as Somalia and Bosnia. Intruders were retired from the attack role in the mid 1990s, however they continue in use as EA-6B Prowlers in the electronic warfare role.
The Intruder modeled here is the initial A-6A variant, as used in the Vietnam Conflict. Painstaking detail work and quality construction will make this model a prime selection for any collection.
