A raised and indented relief surface offers clear notation of mountain ranges, changes in sea level, and changes in altitude. I purchaed this globe for a granddaughter's 8th birthday, 11/12/12. She just finished a unit dealing with the world globe and maps. Haven't taken it out of the box yet. Want to wrap it as it is. What I could see looks fine. The box arrived in great shape. So not expecting a problem. I was concerned about the age limit on your description info. So I called Haymarket to see why the Pioneer w/plastic base was recommended for 8 and over. Bought a very similar globe, also Replogle, about 2 years ago for my oldest granddaughter. It's called "World Ocean Series". It also has a metal base. Was very pleased with it. New one (Atlantis) arrived a few days after ordered. Pleased because Confirmation said it wouldn't come til unil 11/13. Almost stopped me from ordering.

I use the product for academic and pleasure research. I like the raised relief and the detail. The construction is good, however, on this particular globe; possibly because of the raised relief, the glue lines are not onluy visible but give me the4 impression they may come apart. Other than that I love the globe. Thanks for providing a good quality globe for a reasonable price.
