B-17G Sentimental Journey

Description

The B-17 Flying Fortress is arguably one of the most influential aircraft designs in history. More than 12,000 B-17s were produced during its production run, with the first prototype taking flight on July 28, 1935. Approximately a third of those produced were lost in combat. Despite a performance inferior (on paper) to the other primary Allied strategic bomber, the B-24, the B-17 was generally preferred over the other craft by U.S. crewmen.

This particular model represents the B-17G Sentimental Journey, an aircraft still flying today. The B-17G was the most widely produced model with more than 8000 aircraft built, and represented the finalized version of the design. With 13 .50-caliber machine guns in various mountings, it had nearly double the firepower of the original versions. The B-17G had a range of 2000 miles, a 6000 lb bomb load, and a crew of ten.
