Description
The Sky Surfer V is Baader Planetarium's premium red dot finder. Made of black anodized aluminum, the Sky Surfer V is an elegant match for any telescope. Its large clear aperture makes finding objects easy (outside diameter of the SSV is 45mm). As with its smaller brother, the Sky Surfer V avoids the dew problems of other finders, thanks to its integral (and removable) dewshields. The new optimized visual coatings result in virtually transparent views of the sky (unlike many other red-dot finders).
Mounting and adjustment of the Sky Surfer V is simple. Elevation and Azimuth adjustment is accomplished by turning the two enclosed adjustment knobs. The red locator dot intensity is adjusted by an 11 position adjusting knob. Attachment to your telescope is also straightforward, with all necessary parts included. Simply attach a base to your telescope, slip on the finder, and tighten the two dovetail clamp screws. Three bases are included. The short base works best for large tubes. It includes two mounting slots (for screw mounting) and may also be attached with double-sided foam tape (supplied). The taller base fits smaller diameter tubes (as well as large tubes using the included spacer plate), and the slotted holes accommodate the factory hole pattern of popular SCTs. The third base fits the Vixen finder dovetail standard used on many import refractors. Each Sky Surfer includes a replaceable 3V lithium battery for extra long life.
Each Sky Surfer V now includes Baader's new machined aluminum quick release dovetail system, consisting of an aluminum dovetail riser (mounts to the finder) and dovetail block that mounts to your scope.

Comments about Baader Planetarium Sky Surfer V Finderscope with Quick Release Dovetail Bracket:
This is easily the best red dot finder that I've used. I'm particularly a fan of the alignment screws. They have a small click as they rotate so dialing it in was very easy. The best part is I don't have to realign after removing the scope! It just goes right back to where it was the last time I attached it.
The dot also does a good job staying fixed on target when moving up/down and left/right. Not right to the edges but well enough that you don't have to worry about being directly behind the scope.
Brightness on the dot was easily adjustable and the see through caps and dew shields were a huge extra bonus.
Only issue is with the description listed above. The finder comes with the single vixen style base, as seen in the picture. The base curves back outward at the edges so should be attachable to any size scope (I have it on a C9.25) but won't make perfect contact in the center on larger tubes.

Comments about Baader Planetarium Sky Surfer V Finderscope with Quick Release Dovetail Bracket:
This thing is great! I put it on my Celestron 8" SCT, which already had a decent (not-stock) red dot finder and it was immediately clear this thing made it look like a joke. The pics on the site don' make it clear, but this is basically a giant non-magnifying dot finder that has some nice clear covers on the ends and removable dew-shield-like extensions on both sides. It's much, much nicer to look through than any of the little ones.

Comments about Baader Planetarium Sky Surfer V Finderscope with Quick Release Dovetail Bracket:
Time is something I never seem to have enough of during an imaging session. Clear nights are few and every moment spent in the set up is less time spent imaging. The Baader Planetarium Sky Surfer V is fast to put the target in my 9mm eyepiece using a 120mm F5 refractor. German made, imagine that something not made in China, and very well built. After the initial adjustment it stays put even after repeated removal from the scope. It comes equipped with see through lens caps; a real plus in heavy dew situations as you can wipe the caps with your fingers without damaging the actual lens or coatings. Unlike my stock red dot finder the glass lens is completely see through with no visible mirrored finish, coatings or loss of brightness. I can see faint objects that my other RDF would lose due to its coated mirrored surface. For me this was money well spent.
