We recently purchased a new desktop computer and wanted to upgrade our home office furniture at the same time. Our office is somewhat small and we needed something to not only contain our computer, but help with organization as well. We came across this desk and hutch combo and decided to take a chance on it.

First impressions: The most important thing that should be known about this desk and hutch is that they are very heavy (a good thing in my opinion). The desk and hutch arrived in three separate packages, ranging from 60 to 90 lbs. each. The unit is packaged very well with plenty of protection, and nothing was damaged upon initial inspection.

Assembly: The desk and hutch are surprisingly easy to assemble, although it does take quite a bit of time and patience. We assembled the desk in about five hours and the hutch in about 3 hours over two days Although there are no words, only pictures, the instructions are generally easy to follow. The only tools required are a Phillips head screwdriver, a hammer, and wood glue. Glue is included in the package, but it is not nearly enough to complete the project. In order to attach the hutch to the desk with the included metal brackets, you will need a 1/8'' drill.

Once the desk is assembled, especially with the hutch attached, it is difficult to move, not only because of the weight but also because of the L-shape of the desk. I recommend using furniture sliders, to move it in to place something we did not have. If you do wish to move it to another room or a different home, partial disassembly would be necessary.

Quality: As mentioned above, the desk is quite heavy and study. It has a very solid feel to it and we have not noticed any creaking, squeaking, or other noises. In fact, the assembled unit has very little "give" to it at all, a quality you might not find with cheaper desks.

Design: The design of the desk is simply the best we were able to find for our price range (about $500). The "antique" finish is not bright white, but rather an off-white with a slightly distressed wood look. It's very attractive in our office and makes it feel very warm and comfortable, and not as bright and clinical as a typical office setting. The darker wood color of the desktop provides for a bit of needed contrast.

Functionality: Besides being attractive and sturdy, the features or the hutch are what sold us. The two concealed cabinets, three cubby holes, and a middle shelf give you plenty of space for all your documents, a few photos, and some office supplies. The file drawer of the desk is a welcome feature and the pencil tray/keyboard drawer is good for making the desk look clean and tidy when not in use.

We are very pleased with this purchase and are glad we spent a little extra money to invest in something nice. It's more practical for a smaller home, where a large solid-wood desk would be out of place, but much better quality and functionality than anything we saw at the major office store chains.
