I just started Astronomy when I received my first telescope for Christmas. It was a Starter telescope that I had to be careful not to breath around it or it would vibrate/move. This Celestron 5SE is wonderful. The tripod is made of heavier weight and it don't vibrate as easy. I have already learned that you got to be patient when trying to find and see planets/stars clusters with any telescope. I don't have a lot of this so it's been a big experience for me. Love it though. First time I got Saturn focused in was around 2:00am one cold morning. I wanted to scream and wake my family and neighbors up. LOVE the Celestron 5SE telescope and hobby!!

I recent purchased this scope and have to say I was completely disappointed. Out of the box it was missing a cover for the battery compartment. Then when I tried to use it I found out that it had about a 90 degree dead region in the azithmutal drive. Even worse was the remote thought the scope was in fact moving through this zone. so the alignment would be lost if the drive got into this region.

Then there is the software for computer controlling the telescope. This is a joke. All it does is show an image of the hand controller on the computer monitor. Now you get click the controller buttons with your mouse instead of directly on the hand controller. Duh...why would anyone want to do that? I was expecting a star map that I could click on and the scope would then go to that star. But it does not do that. And to make the software even dummer, they use an old style RS232 serial cable and,get this, it has to plug into the hand controller. Unless your computer is 5 to 10 years old it probably doesn't even have this kind of port. You can go out and spend $25-$30 for an adapter. But that would be a waste considering the software. My impression is that Celestron just wanted to say the scope copuld be computer controlled.

With all of these problems you would think that Celestron would help. I tried calling their number but got a message to leave an email address. Customer service has been obviously outsourced oversees so you will not get to actually talk to anyone.

The manual is also poorly written with essentially no information on how to fix anything. The lack of information in it was amazing.

On the positive side I will say that the optics seemed crisp and sharp. But then I thought I was buying a complete telescope.

After wasting a two weeks on it, I returned it. I would not but this scope or any other in the Celestron Nexstar series. Poor quality control and no support.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 5 SE Telescope:

I just purchased this telescope over the SLT 130 since the Nexstar SE series won telescope of the year. It came two days after placing the order, talk about fast shipping! It took about half an hour to setup which isn't that bad. Leightweight nothing too heavy to carry. Haven't been able to use it since the clouds are blocking my view to the heavens. In addition to it being cold out, I hear it doesn't work well with cold. It will receive 5/5 stars when I take it out and use it. I can't wait!
I'm also thinking about buying a barlow but I'm not sure. Maybe more magnification lenses. A case would be nice to protect it from the dangers of the world.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 5 SE Telescope:

I plan to update this review as I use the telescope but I want to write about my experience so far. First off, telescopes.com provided fast shipping which was great. It arrived when I was at work and it stormed that night (I am a firefighter and work 24 hour shifts) so I was worried that it would be damaged on my return. I found that it had been double boxed then each peice had its own box on the inside. Very well packaged. That said, I am not that pleased that a [$] telescope was left on my front porch even though I live in a quiet community. The foam that surrounds the telescope and arm is very sturdy. I have set that aside to put in a sterilite case later. I see no reason to purchase one of the expensive cases online unless I plan to travel via air. This is my first descent telescope. Until now I have been using the less than $100 plastic long tube scopes. As a matter of fact my current longer tube model is a Celestron. I unfornately expected the same thing but grander scale so I set myself up for a let down. I was WAAAYYYY off. You get what you pay for in this case. First unpacked was the tripod. I have a Canon EOS T1i system with a very nice tripod. This tripod with the telescope is very heavy and sturdy even compared to a high quality camera tripod. The only thing to put togeter on the tripod was to mount the acessory tray which is a simple knob. Then I opened the box with the scope in it. The scope came attached to the arm already and packed in foam that is about 3" thick on all sides. Simply lift it out and line it up. The three knobs do the rest of the work. I mounted the spotting scope and the eye piece, added batteries and I was in business. Very simple. I noticed the eye pieces were not light weight either. They were heavy quality feeling pieces made out of aluminum. So far I am very happy with my decision to go with this scope. I do have the power tank and the eyepieces as well. I hope to catch some great images very soon. Of course it won't stop raining now.

Comments about Celestron NexStar 5 SE Telescope:

I mainly use the telescope for astronomy but have also used it for some bird watching as well. I really enjoy the fact that it is easy to transport but the construction is excellent quality. The computer works well and I use it with both batteries and a Celectron power tank. I find the optics are good quality and the computer is easy to set up and use. I like this scope enough to have sold my 6" refractor and never miss it.
