Turn-of-the-century English furniture design just took a turn for the cool. The City Club Oxford 6 Drawer Chest has the grooved side columns, offset molding blocks, and gently tapered feet you'd find in a treasured antique, but it truly shines for what it doesn't have. No fuss, no high-falutin' filigree.

Made in the USA of maple and select hardwood solids with cherry and mahogany veneers, this dresser has five lower drawers and one narrow, chest-spanning upper drawer. All are dotted with round pulls that have concentric rings, tiny bead detailing, and a mottled brass finish. The pulls coordinate perfectly with the Blair finish, a ruddy blend of red and brown that's the result of hand waxing, gentle distressing, and other hand-wrought techniques.

You can group this chest with other pieces in the City Club collection for the complete look. Some pieces in this collection match exactly, while others simply coordinate, so go ahead and get a little eclectic.

Stanley Furniture's main objective is to produce quality and stylish furniture by using the best wood materials, construction procedures, and elegant finishes on their products to help you fashion your home decor the way you imagined. All of their furniture is hand-crafted from quality woods, incorporating other superior materials such as aluminum, glass, plastic, leather, and marble. Every joint is carefully constructed (keeping wood's sensitivity to heat and humidity in mind) allowing for expansion and contraction. All joints are held together with glue and nail.

Stanley's 30-step finishing process starts with an undertone stain that is applied to a hand-sanded piece. Next, the stain is sealed with a wash coat, then hand sanded again with filler applied to pack the wood pores and smooth out the surface. A sealer coat is then applied, the piece is hand sanded again, and hand padded to mellow the tone. From there, a luster glaze is rubbed on by hand, followed by antiquing or distressing also done by hand. Finally, after drying, each piece is hand waxed and rubbed prior to final inspection.

Care

Do not place your furniture in direct sunlight and/or a damp area. Arrange your furniture so it is not placed in front of or over heating or air conditioning vents. Avoid placing furniture directly under windows. Be careful not to place plastic materials (place mats, lamp bases, notebooks, etc.) on your furniture. Certain plastics have ingredients that may react with and damage the finish. Occasionally rotate accessories so they do not remain in the same spot for extended periods. Avoid creating marks on your furniture by placing a piece of felt, cloth, or leather under accessories. Lift objects from the top surface rather than dragging them across the finish when moving them. Use a protective pad when using your furniture as a writing surface (especially when using a ballpoint pen). Wipe up spills promptly. Water left over a prolonged period of time will cause white spots in the finish, and alcohol, perfume, after-shave, and medicines can cause severe damage to the finish. Dust frequently with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. To remove accumulated dust or old furniture wax buildup, use a soft, lint-free cloth which has been dampened in a solution of mild detergent and warm water. Dry thoroughly using a clean, lint-free cloth, and then apply furniture polish, wiping it in the direction of the wood grain. It's recommended that the furniture be polished every six months.
