Dark red coloring to the wood; works well for us. We've been looking for the right piece for a while, and this really fits the bill. Mounted this horizontally above our entry table, and it's perfect. Substantial size and weight made mounting it a two-person job, but all hardware was included to ensure it's secure so it went quickly. I'm more pleased every day, and our grown daughter has already put dibs on it as a family heirloom piece.
