About Gainey Ceramics
An industry leader, Gainey Ceramics incorporates design elements from ancient Roman vessels to iconic mid-century ceramics to create incomparable modern styles that will bring any space to life. Gainey has proudly handcrafted ceramic planters in their California facility for over 60 years. Never ones to ignore changing tastes and trends, they have also developed a complete line of lightweight fiberglass products as well as glass-reinforced concrete planters (GFRC). Gainey Ceramics focuses on manufacturing their products using the most environmentally friendly practices available. They recycle everything from their broken bisque to water, glaze, and even the heat from their kilns. Along with local California manufacturing, their ceramics contain 25% recycled materials making them some of the "greenest" products on the planter market and eligible for LEEDS credits.
Gainey Ceramics Green Commitment
A proud member of the US Green Building Council, Gainey Ceramics has been practicing "green" habits for years, but they don't do it only to comply with California's strict emission controls, or to be trendy. They do it because being a smart, sustainable manufacturer is important to them.
Gainey uses three materials in their planters: ceramic, fiberglass, and glass-fiber-reinforced concrete (GFRC). Ceramic is the greenest of the three, and while fiberglass and GFRC are considered clean products, they may not quality as "green", are not produced in their California facility. Gainey's ceramic products are produced 100% at their factory and all of their clay bodies contain in excess of 25% recycled materials. All water used in production is recycled back into the clay and they do not dispose of any waste water from production. Any ceramic product lost during production is re-ground into powder and reintroduced into the clay.
Gainey does not vent their spray booths to outside air - instead, glaze overspray is trapped in fabric filters and is recycled. After the air passes through these filters it continues through a series of cartridge filters until it's so clean the air can be vented inside their facility. They have significantly reduced hazardous materials in their glazes over the years. Their ceramic glaze coatings contain zero volatile organic compounds. They've also made investments in more energy-efficient kilns that have lower emissions. Their new kilns are so efficient, in fact, that Gainey has established the standard of Best Available Control Technology for oxides of nitrogen and oxides of sulfur emissions within the Southern California Air Quality Management District. This is the highest standard available and dictates vigilant monitoring of all emissions from our manufacturing process.
Gainey has completely reinvented their drying process and now uses waste heat from their tunnel kiln to keep their drying rooms at a constant 150 degrees. They've taken steps to comply with the EPA standards under the 1990 requirements of the Clean Air Act. They're so clean, they're no longer required to function as a manufacturing company under Title 5 status. As they develop new products, Gainey will continue to move forward with the environment in mind and a commitment to do the right thing.
