This item is made from oil-finished natural yellow birch hardwood, which is indigenous to the Northeastern U.S. and ranges in color from blond to a darker walnut shade; the natural variation in color allows this workcenter to coordinate with your existing decor. It boasts an impressive 2-inch thick butcher block top that's perfect for cutting and preparing food. Other features include a 10-inch deep, large-capacity drawer, three chrome towel bars, and a lower slatted shelf for open storage. Choose between options with or without a built-in drop leaf to maximize your work surface. Locking caster wheels provide convenient mobility or stationary use as needed. This work center ships ready to assemble. The process is easy, requiring only common household tools. Furniture will be shipped with all other necessary hardware and easy-to-follow instructions.
The top of this work center is made for chopping and cutting, and any scratches can be removed with high-grit sandpaper. Recent studies indicate that wood is safer for food preparation than plastic or glass cutting boards; bacteria like salmonella disappear quickly on wood, but tend to live and thrive on plastic. You should always clean your wooden cutting board surface with soapy water, taking care to remove any food particles and dry the board immediately.
To maintain the beautiful finish of your butcher block top, always wipe clean with a damp sponge or cloth and use a mild detergent. You should never soak the wood or let water stand for long periods of time, as it affects the grain. Rinse well and towel-dry before applying new oil. We recommend Catskill's Original Butcher Block Oil, although drug store mineral oil can also be effective in sealing wood. Oil will enhance the color of the wood and offer short-term protection. The old adage of oiling the surface once a week for the first month and once a month for the first year is appropriate, imbuing your cart or island with a rich, golden glow.

First off, this is my first online product review ever...but I felt I had to do it. I was looking for a product that would offer additional storage and workspace in my kitchen (I love to cook and to entertain) but would also provide a place to sit and work (laptop), read, and eat in my kitchen. My friend is a chef and has an older but almost identical version of this island in his kitchen that he and I both love and that he highly recommended. He uses it around the clock, and it still looks great. He also said that though he has a kitchen table his guests love to sit at it instead to talk to him while he cooks. We ordered it online and--amazing!--it arrived within 48 hrs. This leads us to my one complaint...it was not exactly easy to assemble. However, once I got into it and understood the special assembly a bit better it became easy. If I had to assemble another now I could do it quickly. Perhaps better directions? Also, I had a screw break and as there was no extra had to call them for a replacement. However, they were so prompt to reply and so courteous, and the parts arrived so quickly, that I was impressed enough to not even care anymore about the small delay. Anyway, I am now sitting at my new island to type this, and really couldn't be happier with the product. It looks beautiful, it's a great size, it is easily movable with hard rubber wheels that do not scratch my tile floor, and the 2-inch thick butcher block top is just perfect. The island is very solid. It serves every purpose I was searching for and then some, and I can see why my friend has loved his so much. And the speedy and great service was also a huge and too rare plus. Sorry about this very long review, but...now you know! Highly recommend. Will purchase more products from Catskill Craftsmen and ekitchenislands in future.

This is a great product, although the directions for putting it together are pretty crummy. Once put together it is everything that I could have asked for and more. My only complaint on the item is that the top is not conditioned and finished & conditioned - and it does not state this in the product description.
The customer service on the other hand was very poor. I contacted them directly as i wanted to have it in time for a Party. Their customer service agent took my order over the phone, including credit card number, shipping & billing addresses, etc... 2 days later, I happened to check on the order as I had not recieved a confirmation receipt nor a shipping receipt and was concerned. Thank god I did as she had not placed the order. I was therefore forced to re-order and pay extra to have it shipped to me faster to ensure that it was received in the appropriate time frame that I originally wanted. I would recommend the product but WOULD NOT recommend ordering from this company due to to this.

Received my unit the other day, I hired someone to put it together. It did take him a couple of hours to assemble it.
It is perfect for what I wanted. It did come in with a damage-your customer support could not have been nicer.
As it turn out, the damage really is not visable.

I show myself here as a "Budget Shopper" but in reality I'm a "Value" shopper. I want the best quality. Something that will last for a long time. This is one. Also, I almost didn't buy this due to the "tag" that it was difficult to assemble. That could not be farther from the reality I experienced. It took me 2.5 hours with one medium and small phillips screwdrivers and the allen wrenches provided. Buy looking at the pictures you know what parts go together. The "Bastion" fasteners are a little tricky, and I had to adjust a couple of them to pull the sides together tightly, but after 1-2 of them you know how deep to set the posts to get everything to snub up tightly. My wife is elated and it is a compliment to our kitchen.
