The assembly was somewhat difficult (maybe not for a handy person with appropriate tools). The wood appears darker in person, but these are comfortable and utilitarian for us.

Nice-looking stools, but when my giant fat 115 lb wife sat on the edge of one of two, part of the bottom structure pulled loose. Not learning from that mistake, she wiggled around a few days later on the second one and did the same to that. Fortunately, only the joints pulled loose, no wood actually broke. So I re-glued (or maybe really glued it GOOD for the first time) with good carpenter glue and put a wood screw in each joint for extra support. Manufacturing appeared to dab only a tiny amount of glue on the joint and then secure with a tiny brad. Pretty shoddy. But otherwise, the wood seems solid and sturdy; I'm hoping my repairs will make these puppies last us a while. They weren't expensive, but there's just two of us in our 70's and we thought careful use might make them last. If you're a little bit handy with tools and are prepared to reinforce some quick and dirty manufacturing, you should be happy with these. There was also a little problem with the initial assembly in that one screw was too short to connect with the lockwasher on it. An eighth of an inch longer would have worked better.
