As stated before, you have to purchase a serial to usb adapter. While it did work to update the autostar controller, one thing I found was that you have to plug in the cable with telescope and laptop off, then power up scope, then laptop. Otherwise pc and autostar software would not recognize the controller. Next step is to figure out how to control the scope from pc. 3 seconds to download the update, 15 minutes to upload it to controller.

I initially purchased this cable/adapter to allow my computer to connect to my LX200GPS in order to update the firmware. Since then I have used the cable to connect and control my scope using my laptop. Just plug it in and it just works!
I did need to purchase a USB to Serial adapter separately which connects to this cable and allows me to control the serial scope using a USB port on my computer.
