I bought these mostly for astronomical viewing and for that, they are wonderful. Planets show good color and size. Stars are pinpoints. The Orion Nebula shows well. The image is nice and clean out to the periphery of the view. There was a little colorization of Jupiter, but not obnoxious.
I took them out into the Sonoran Desert and distant mountain and rock formations showed great detail, both day and night. Earthshine on the moon was stunning. I have yet to mount them on a tripod, but could see where that would be advantageous. These baby's are fairly heavy. You need to hold on with both hands, and steady yourself for a non-wobbly view. They are great if you like driving to a lookout and viewing, but would not be good for backpacking or going on walks. The skinny strap that comes with them is strong enough, but you won't find yourself letting them dangle from your neck for very long. Sitting at a table, reclining in a chair, leaning against a car or tree (not a cactus) makes for great viewing in an optical instrument that packs well in your carry on suitcase. For the price, they surpassed my expectations.

I got these because the Celestron 15x70s were too big and shaky. These are much better. Very good image, wide field of view, not too shaky. You can use these without a tripod. However, the first pair I ordered had a black speck (like paint) on the inside of one of the eyepiece lenses and was obviously visible when looking through the binoculars, so I had to return them. Second pair arrived, and - unbelievably, they also had a very minor speck of dust on the inside of one of the objective lenses. However, it is minor, and you can't see it when looking through, so I will not return these. But beware -- these are made in China, so I guess the quality control is not too great. When I buy a new pair of binoculars, I expect the optics to be perfectly clean! Other than that, they are very sturdy and solid -- very well built. Image is very bright, and clear. I would recommend these to a friend.

With this power of magnification you will need a tripod. My el-cheap-o camara tripod works great. These binoculars are a perfect addition to my Meade LX200 telescope. Our Maker is quite the Artist! So many stars & so little time.

Comments about Meade 9x63mm Astronomy Binoculars:

This is nice pair of binoculars for astronomy. It gives the brightest image you can get (7 mm exit pupil, which is the maximum for the dark adapted eye) and has a 5.8 degree field of view. The image is nice and crisp.

It is relatively heavy though at 44 oz, just 4 oz lighter than the Celestron 15x70 which I also own. This has to be considered a heavy astronomy binocular - the weight difference is so small that it is unnoticeable, i.e. no weight advantage in going down to the 63 mm objective. I bought it for the improved brightness and greater field of view though. I have yet to be compare the two instruments head-to-head to see if a brightness difference is discernible.

A surprising and annoying defect is the impossibility of attaching the strap! The strap attachment points are so narrow it is impossible to thread them through (especially given the high-friction rubberized coating). I even resorted to flattening the webbing with a hot knife, and threading fishing line through the webbing as a leader to pull it though, but nothing has worked. This is a major problem for binoculars this heavy. You need the strap!

Although I have marked this as "would recommend" I would only do so while also noting the weight and strap issues.

        Customer Q & A

        3 Questions About This Product
Q: "Can the 9x63 be effectively used without a tripod? Please elaborate?"
A: Yes! It sure can. This binocular is very popular for land and sky observation. It can be used with or without the tripod. Granted, it is a large binocular, but its still manageable as a hand-held binocular
Q: "Will I be able to see galaxies and nebulae with this binocular? I appreciate the wide field of view it has, but would it be better to have a larger objective lens to start out with? What would be the largest objective lens that one can hand hold without a tripod? I am just starting out and I am not sure which size to get. Does this binocular come with a tripod adaptor included? Thanks, Sal"
A: no this binocular does not come with a Tripod adapter. As for the Size of the objective lens you can hand hold, it depends on how strong you are. What causes the image to be jittery (where you would want a tripod) is the Magnification the higher the magnification the more you need a tripod. The bigger the objective lenses though the bigger and brighter the image in the binocular.
Q: "Can i get a tripod that will fit on my new purchase of TravelView 9X63 Binoculars, if the"
A: answer is yes could you let me know what I need to purchase. Thank you very much, Andy Dyer. Actually any standard photographic tripod will work with the 9x63 binoculars. you will however need a a binocular tripod adapter or L mount as they are sometimes called. Any standard adapter will work i suggest the Zhumell L Mount Tripod Adapter model #TL135AB
