The material is some tropical wood that's very light, yet I think the fence will be sturdy. Finish is as shown; quite attractive, although the spindles are not "fine wood"---a bit rough. Our entryway is just like the one pictured in the online catalog--just over six feet (72 inches) wide. Most fences I looked at online were not wide enough. The little pass through gate will be perfect for safe human passage without having to move the fence itself (although it is light enough that could be done, at one end.) This is crucial when guests are elderly. Fence is light enough it could be removed, folded and put away in seconds if temporarily not needed. The fence/gate came very promptly after I placed my order. We have a 13 pound mini-schnauzer. He's not the least inclined to try pushing the fence aside. I'm not sure if a larger dog might be able to do this. Could mean the ends of the fence would need to be fastened to the wall somehow. This is NOT an issue with our small dog. It's perfect for our use.

It's beautiful and sturdy. The wood is darker than this picture, a dark cherry, which is perfect for my house. My dog can't knock it down and it's easy enough for people to walk through. I love it, and it came fully assembled!
