The Simply Cedar Doghouse boasts a top-quality construction using solid cedar wood 2x2 slats with redwood stain for lasting beauty. A green roof breaks up the color beautifully. This is a beautiful doghouse with well fitting pieces and trim. [...] It was not exactly as advertised in that the pics showed it as having all lightly golden stained siding and roof but mine arrived with the roof stained green. Speaking of the finish, I'm planning on adding a couple of coats of sealant to my doghouse as the finish it came with is extremely light and doesn't appear to be very weather resistant at all. This is not a problem if you want yours to weather to a nice grey but I like the golden color of the wood. One of the reasons I purchased this particular doghouse is because it has a "removable" roof. The roof is removable...after you first remove a couple of screws. I plan on adapting this to a hinge and latch closure for a quicker and easier roof entry. Only other thing to note is that my dog initially refused to go into it because of the strong cedar smell. The odor faded quickly and he now loves it. Over all I am happy with my purchase and expect it to last for many years to come.P.S. The day after I received it it snowed for three days with an accumulation of 4+ feet of very heavy, wet snow. This doghouse stood up to the heavy snow load with no problem.

Looks nice and seems sturdy but dog would not go in it. Don't blame her as it smells like deck sealant. I bought it for the cedar but seems like they put some sort of sealant on the inside and it smells very strongly like chemicals (no not like real cedar). I had to use orange cleaner to get the sticky cleaner off the plastic door flaps. Not sure I want my dog to spend time in there and come into the house smelling like that (besides is it healthy for her either?) I am hoping like deck sealer it will off gas and be ok. Too bad as it looks nice.

The house looks wonderful. Took a bit longer than the 20 minutes they claim it takes to put together. Great quality though, down to a bit of insulation on the inside of the roof to stop water infiltration. Love it!

I am very disappointed in this product. It arrived damaged and I had to repair it. Very poor quality materials. It is already falling apart--less than one year from purchase.

The toxic smell of petroleum is still so intense after weeks that neither the dog nor the humans can go near it. Roof does NOT remove to clean as add said. Construction is incredibly flimsy, thin materials, poor design, hard to put together - no real directions, pieces not pre-drilled, screws too small so they went all the way through, overhang not adequate for rain protection. Would return this in a heartbeat except it is too heavy and awkward to repack. If the odor ever fades I will donate it to a shelter.

This house is great, Made of hearth grade cedar. Took me 15 minutes to setup myself. I did notice the stain was a little thin. But this isn't a problem. If you don't mind it turning gray over time then leave it. What makes it go gray is the UV rays. I put an extra coat of Mini Wax spar clear coat on it in satin. Took about 30 minutes. If house sits right out in sun buy the gloss finish it will block rays better. My house sits in shade so satin is great. Had a rain storm 2 days after sitting it up. Beaded up like a waxed car. My husky loves it. I got the large house but could of got the medium. I will probably add the heater with the cold climate we get in Kansas. The house really makes the yard stand out. Neighbors have said nothing but great things about it. Can't go wrong. These people delivered in 2 days. Very happy overall.

I choose to purchase this doghouse because I did not want to design and build from scratch. This doghouse was quick to setup, took me and a friend about 30 minutes, after reviewing both sets of instructions and correcting errors made because of omissions in the instructions, we chose to divide the labor, one for handling parts, the other installing them. Make sure you look at BOTH sets of instructions, as stated in other reviews, if you have the covered porch or you will have problems. The instructions are all drawings, so they do not tell you that you need to assemble on level ground to get the tilt on the porch correct. The brackets for the front upper wall to mount the porch did not line up correctly. You have a choice of the upper hole or the lower hole but not both, (wall holes were about 1.5 inches apart, the bracket was about 1.25 inches apart, guess the templates did not match). Also the drawings do not tell you which direction to align the front supports of the porch to get the tilt, if you install them wrong the roof on the porch will not have a runoff or will run back to the dog house. With that said yes it is a good bog house, for my friend and I assembly was easy as we overcame the problems.
The description said "Roof panels are lightweight and removable" yes they are if you remove the 4 screws holding the panels down, and "This dog house is insulated" The insulation is a dog door installed for you.
With this said I feel the product is over priced for the assembly problems and errors in the instructions. I would recommend only to people with above average maintenance skills or someone who knows how to read exploded drawings.
After thought, why should cedar need to be stained with a redwood stain? A clear would do much better to show the cedar. Of course if you are mixing woods this stain would hide that fact.
